Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hey has any of you seen pictures on Ebay of the Americana of a color that the breeder is calling Chestnuts on Ice? Tamarafarm of Texas has this color breeding true. The hens look like Wheatens but the roos are just red and white. More specifically they have dark maroon on the wings, rusty saddle, and golden red penciled (as best I can tell from her pics) hackles. They are amazing looking! I may find myself getting some of her eggs next spring.

I have seen the auction.It appears to be wheaten based red pyle possibly with the mahogany gene.

Almost every book I've looked at, at the book store, has had incorrect info for ameraucanas and araucanas. When I've looked at books on sheep, it's the same for Jacob sheep. My conclusion since the wrong info is usually the same is that they just copy from each other, hatchery web sites, and google search. A few of the books have had pictures of EEs listed as ameraucanas and araucanas. Apparently tufts are even more confusing to them.

I blame the hatcheries for the issues. They sell birds saying they are a breed and they aren't. Even my light brahmas from the hatchery only bear a passing resemblance to actual well bred birds. My husband was shocked at seeing the difference at a show. I swear they cross everything with production reds and whites to make them lay more eggs.

I won't buy from a hatcheries anymore just because I'm tired of all the reproductive issues. I'm wondering how many I'm going to lose after molt this year. I already lost a POL brahma and 2 two year old EE hens to internal laying this year.

I got the first 10 from the feed store at Easter, only because they were colored and my daughter had never seen this before. I only knew 3 were brahma because of the feathered feet, but never guesses I would end up with such a variety, all but the 3 were a different breed. I have friends and neighbors who also got chicks there same time and didn't end up with what I did. I'm not looking to breed specifics, just interested in furthering my knowledge. Unfortunately I've come across some not so nice people on here so I'll just seek help else where. I'm not the chicken expert but seems those who are on here just view those who aren't as stupid and liars! And as far as hugs and kisses, I don't force my chickens, they come to me. If I could get a video I would surely post it. They get on my shoulders and arm, if its out, and they get right in my face and lay there head on my arm or shoulder. Some very gently peck my face, this is what I mean by kisses. I don't maul my chickens. I don't want to do anything that will stress them out. All my other 13 I got from 2 different people, one of which didn't know breeds the other knew all but a couple. Doesn't matter, like I said I'm just trying to further my knowledge on breeds. Here is a thread for the birds you have. They are super friendly on that thread and love each bird's Uniqueness.
True Ameraucanas are bred to a cookie cutter standard and people take their work seriously, don't take offense. They work years on breeding, cull in large numbers and work on getting Pure lines and quality birds. So when a new owner pops in with EE mixes saying they're pure or asking for name of colors on **** near every page of the thread, it gets frustrating.
Just take the advice and keep it handy. One does Not stop their quest for pure Ameraucana lol you'll learn chicken math in no time

I'm new too and have both easter eggers and Ameraucanas. It can be frustrating to figure out what breed new girls are or to find out you have one breed when you were told or paid for another breed.

I don't think anyone was trying to be mean. They may be short because you're probably the 5000 person they've had to tell don't have ameraucanas.
If it came from a hatchery its an EE and if it came from a feed store - most likely an EE. Feed stores order FROM hatcheries.
Hatcheries sell any colored layer mix as an ameraucana as a sales ploy. Trusting new buyers LOVE ameraucanas at the click of a button and they don't care if its misrepresenting the birds OR that the new customers now think they have pure birds and get mad when they're told their EEs (ameraucana mixes)

and a word of warning,,,

while you think it's cool to have the birds land on your shoulder and "peck" your face, they are birds,,,small little brains,,,when one of them pecks you in the eye (and I really hope that doesn't happen but it will) you will understand that letting them start that behavior is a really BAD idea

worse case scenario, would be that happens to a family member or friend that is visiting your yard

Ok, I have a lead on some Blue Wheaten hens. I've been studying the standard but am still a novice. I believe they are out of the Wayne Meredith line so they have good lineage. What should I be looking for when I go and look at them?

I got my 1st birds from Wayne a year ago, the size is good on pullets, there is a bit of a problem with black in the hackles of my Wheatens, the Blue Wheaton pullets didn't show it nor did it come through in the pullet chicks I hatched. Not sure this helps you, just look for it and avoid it if at all possible, one less thing to deal with.

I'm sorry for the way I worded my post. I didn't meant to make you feel bad. Some people have chickens who like to be handled, but on the whole, they really don't. I could have made my point without making you feel bad. Sorry.

This thread is about purebred Ameraucanas. A lot of people buy chicks from hatcheries and feed stores that are labeled as purebred Ameraucanas when they really aren't. It is not your fault that you have been misled. I sometimes think the sellers also don't realize they are misleading their customers.

It is frustrating for the serious fanciers of the breed to constantly have to address this misinformation that is floating around.
