Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Howdy,
For BW/W guys or dolls? This is the easiest! Since the guys have all the color, at about 2-4 weeks you will see a multitude of colored feathers come in. The gals stay a clean white/tan wheaten so it is pretty evident. For the biological differences, the males have peacombs that tend to sit further back on their foreheads, and we have noticed, thicker, sturdier legs. This helps in other color varieties like white or black. As for BW/W this can be harder. I have a show quality hen that has placed very well in shows with only a few tail feathers that have the lightest blue on them. It can take some time to get all their feathers in so you can really tell, but usually by 2-3 months the votes are in! Hope it helps & beautiful birds- we love our too!

Okay Q of our own. We have a black roo & 4 pullets that we hatched out this spring for someone who decided to not buy. They are between 3-4 mo. old and we have finally decided that we are not going to raise this variety. What is a good price to sell a small flock for? They are turning into beautiful birds but I am not sure they will be show quality. We thought we could sell them at a local poultry sale or our poultry show in Dec. We are in Nor. CA if that helps. These are pics of the oldest 2- pullet & roo.

Last week I saw 6 W/BW hens and a BW Roo flock sold for $250 here. 2nd season. Also, a quad of black AMs go for $150 (1 roo, 3 pullets at POL.)

Here is my lady Clover. she was the first to hatch on St. Paddy's Day this year

WOW, she is really nice. Love that body shape, short legs, tail angle, and coloring. Though her beard is a bit... "dangly,' to be scientific about it

I just returned from the Wisconsin International show and 2300 birds were entered. It was a great show and wonderful turn out. This was the first show for me with AM's. They are a new breed for me. Both of my AM's placed quite well.

Although my blue had a leg issue, she still placed well. The judged loved her structure.

My black made Champion Row

My Orpingtons also placed

Congratulations!!!!

Just wanted to post a few pics of my blue and black hens, any critique appreciated!

how old are they? I am basing this on guessing the age of 6 months.

This is just my opinion and has no real value..I am not a judge. I have a copy of the SOP. My words are intended to share MY opinion and nothing more.

It is hard to Judge a bird on one picture..
I see white on the chest of the blue and a breast bone on the black at first look..and those tails...I am sure they will be .beautiful birds after they fill out a bit more. It looks like the head and neck is nice and full already. Love the beards and muff. I am not crazy about the higher tails, and they might settle down a bit with age. The higher tails make the back angle look a bit harsh..I am sure many people love those high tail I simply do not like the way it makes your beautiful curves on your girls look too square. I can't see leg color well, they look like they might be a shade too light and some might confuse that with green, I am sure they will darken a bit if they are young. They should be slate. Not pale blue or green. Again it might just be my view on my computer.
Weigh them and see how close they are to the SOP weight.
Can you show that male? I like his chest and partial head shot. I love a full neck and eyes peeking out of muffs and beards. I do like many things about both of these pullets. If they are mature birds I would reconsider my opinion. The tails would make me put them in my egg barn and not my breeder pen. That is because I try to breed to the SOP. I purchased many chicks this year and hatched over 50 chicks. I have three birds out of all of those birds I kept.
