Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Since no one has commented I will give it a shot. Clyde's tail angle is a bit high. Can't say for sure if its the lighting or if he is showing a lot of silver. Lavender males often look silvery as they get older. Good blacks are a must in lavender breeding.

Okay thanks! So. Are these reasons to NOT breed him if I wanted to get into great lavs? Or are they things that may not show up in all chicks?

Cacar80 did you post Bonnie & Clyde on the Lav Ams thread as well? I did mine but haven't had any replies yet, the more critiques the better in my opinion :)
I saw your pics over there. I would use the larger male his tail is a little higher. Good size smaller comb all plusses. You and Cacar80 need to swap eggs. Her tail angle is high and yours is low. Again good blacks a must for lavender improvement.

Yes, thank you Jerryse! Great to know about the set of his tail! I thought the larger one, second set of pics (Sonic) has better body type, muff & beard as well. I'm mainly concerned with the darker almost lacing I'm seeing with him. Can that be improved by breeding to black as well?

Jerryse, help me out on what "good blacks" means. I mean the genetics of the color, not the conformation of the bird.

I'm just starting working on two very different breeds, but the same color variety--blue, black, splash--so I am very interested on the intricacies of the colors that aren't always readily available. I'm getting 12 straight-run Ameraucana chicks this spring--four blue, four black and four splash to add to my splash pullet, cockerel and blue cockerel.

Well I was hoping I could avoid that but I will give you my opinion. I am not a big follower of the based on silver or based on red line of thinking and I am probably wrong. I feel you can get a bird without leakage from either. For lavender I would think based on silver might be slightly better since it will not show as much if there is leakage. Lavender tends to look silvery on older males anyway. Red leakage on silver looks brassy and lavenders with sun damage look brassy also. For me the test is the splits. If the males are not showing leakage then the lavenders are not showing it either. So then I assume any silver look on the males is just part of lavender. Same for brassiness on lavender males it is sun damage. Type, weight , and tail angle are concerns on lavender right now. The lacing on blues is not a problem yet in blacks and lavender. It will be in the future as the pattern gene is being added to enhance the lacing on blue. I have seen some of these and they will win over birds without the pattern gene. I myself have mixed feelings on this but it may require separating the blues from the blacks and lavender. I have no idea what problems it would cause in lavender if any.

Thank you. You've given me a lot to think about.

I didn't, I'm reading more there just to try and grasp color. I know mine aren't "show birds", lol, and that's really not my goal- and I gather that's what that thread is based on. I am at ground ZERO here so I don't want to bother them there. LOL

the lav thread I started is not just for showing birds. I don't show birds.....don't plan to ever it is about breeding quality lavender ams.
