Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

That bird looks like quite young. She might molt those dark feathers out. Can you take a picture of her wing spread out like my picture below?

Did you see the wing pictures of my blue Cochin cockerel I posted a few days ago?

I bought him from a very respected breeder who said that he was still show quality. I showed him a couple of times and even spoke to the judge about his color/pattern after. The judge wasn't as concerned with his lousy pattern as I was, reminding me that blue is a really hard color to get. He also pointed out that the blue lacing in the Blue Andalusians was not the same as the blue in other breeds, that the Andalusians had not only the blue color (and its lacing) but a lacing pattern added on top of blue. (His background was in Blue Andalusians.) I've entered him in the Cochin's national breed club's current on-line show and will be interested to hear the critique on his color that the judge will give.

Breeders who have seen him are not bothered as much as I am by his pattern. Also, he is a Cochin, which might make a difference in what is acceptable and what is not.

Here's a picture of his wing:

I have a giant camera. Later when one of the children can help, I will try for photos. This conversation about blue has been most interesting. I'm also starting in BBS and LAV Import Orpingtons Learning about the genetics regarding colors has been neat. So far none of the Orps have leaks but they are younger.

My babies are now six weeks old. I'm thinking I have three boys. I'm trying to not get too attached before I have to part with them.

My guess is you have 3 cockerels. I find it very funny that I can quickly look at your birds and think boy, boy, boy, but my own older birds pose a problem for me. I'm in denial. I think out of 12, I have 8 cockerels and 4 pullets.

These pictures are of Papa's Poultry stock. You can see why it is easy to tell the EE's from the AM's. As hard as I plan to cull, I doubt there will mistakes. I only plan to keep blue or black. Several pictures of the feet.
Very nice lacing on the blue pullet.... As for the ee, they look exactly like the ones i got from him.

I'm learning so much from you all - thank you!

Have to confess my patience was at an end. Thought the pullets were 7 months old and STILL NO EGGS! Who keep birds this slow? I was put out. No egg? (I like instant gratification, chickens are forever pushing me out of my comfort zone!)

Last night we got our first egg!

It is so pretty too! A much richer blue than the CLB. I need a blue egg chart it would be fun to see what they are laying.

And I redid the math. They are 6 months to the day. Guess I might keep them after all

Beautiful Ameraucana....mine was a very steady layer till she went broody. I just moved the girls to a new coop and run....that seems to have broken the spell! She's about 7months old. Hope she starts laying eggs again soon. Miss the blue eggs!

Hi All!
So what do I have? I know very little about Ameracaunas other than egg color and am unfamiliar with all the colors within the breed. I thought they were all solid until recently.
We went yesterday to pick up our first flock. This guy was for sale too, from the same farm, and I just had to have him. My son has named him Turbo and I think he's just the coolest! We ended up with zero Ameracauna hens, funny enough. It started raining and we got rushed.
Thanks for your input! :)
