Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Quote:
To my knowledge there are no birds that lay a bright red egg. The Welsummer lays a Terra Cotta or reddish-brown egg and I have seen Marans that are a very dark egg with a reddish tint to them.

With regard to Ameraucanas, both the APA SOP and the ABC state that an Ameraucana "must lay" a blue egg to be considered an Ameraucana. However, having said that, there are some varieties of Ameraucanas who may meet the SOP to be shown as an Ameraucana but are laying a more greenish egg. Most Ameraucana breeders would not sell or hatch those eggs.

All my Ameraucanas lay some variation of a sky-blue.

Lastly, I want you to know that I personally do not believe any honestly asked question is a "dumb question". Please, feel free to ask whatever you'd like. How else do any of us learn?

God Bless,

Thats means you have Easter Eggers not True Ameraucana I loved my Easter Eggers when I had them they are great birds.

I have one true Ameraucana pullet and 4 bantam EE's I think they are a cross of white and weaten Ameraucana and 3 lay a blue egg one one lays a olive green egg, my pullet has not started to lay yet and I haven't found a rooster yet so I can't hatch any eggs yet

Wow that sounds cool congrats! I live in the suburbs and I am building a flock of standard black Ameraucana. Right now I have 1 cockeral and 4 pullets but I am adding two more pullets soon. I will have a really nice flock with great bloodlines by the end of this project. They will primarily be Whitmore Farm (smith and cree) and Directly from Paul Smith! I am also thinking of hatching from www.Masoncreekfarm.com to add a few more birds to my flock in spring from them. I am also going to Ohio Nationals so we will see if I pick up any eggs there

Does anyone know if you can bring eggs on the Airplane?

Any of you know where I can find some Splash Wheaten Americanas? Or at least some all Blue Wheatens so I can breed some from them?

If so, please PM me. Thanks

I have some beautiful Ameracauna's (at least to me) but I have too many and have to decide which ones need to go.

How do you base your decision on that? I have quite a few blue and they are different shades of blue. Some light and some dark all with lacing. Is one better than the other?

Honestly some are still young and I can't go by muffs and beards. I really have too many. I need to downsize by at least 4-5. I have a few splash and some black but for the life of me I can't sex them. I think I have mostly hens.

How do you judge by comb because they don't have a comb (well just a peacomb)

What color eyes are they supposed to have?

I appreciate any help and advice. Thank you.

You should be able to tell from the shape and color of the pea comb it its raised and they are getting longer tail feathers and saddle feathers you should be able to sex them by that. Ameraucana are very difficult to sex though. I think the correct eye color is bay.
Not to sure how to choose which birds you want.

sorry another expert will help out im sure.

I just introduced the Ameraucana trio to the rest of the girls. Its pretty funny the cockeral is doing an amazing job breaking up fights. The Trio Seem to have asserted themseleves as king and queens of the flock! They are just bigger and stronger then everyone but the marans and they marans hens are just to chill to care

We will see how mixed up it gets after the two new pullets and then the two smith pullets are quarentined and added to the mix. He is trying to mate everyone but nobody wants anything to do with him. Well Since the Ameraucana girls will be moving into the lighted coop I should at least have eating eggs soon.

Rustyswoman, you need to get a copy of the SOP. This book will tell you exactly what birds to keep and which to let go of. I think you can get a B&W copy for around $10.
