Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Yeah, I have raised a few so have some idea. I like to know with a high % of surety when I am selling pullets, though! My birds don't have large combs, and lavs are generally pretty uniform in color. I will keep that in mind for the blue mottleds though. My cockerel does have the lovely two-toned cape color you speak of. This year I also plan on banding by breeding, so hopefully that can help as well! Thanks.

Jerry - those are Lav chicks, right? Can you say how accurate you are at sexing at 1 month?

Fairly accurate . Never really keep track . Some males will show late .

Last year, using the tail feather method around 1 to 1.5 weeks, I was 93.3% accurate. Since I have only had one hatchling this year, I can be 100% accurate, or 100% wrong. I am saying it's a girl, though. The one I missed last year, I thought it was a roo because it's tail feathers were not prominent like the others. Turned out to be a hen.

Thanks! Last year I remember the majority that I had wrong were guesses as cockerels, but actually were pullets. So, as long as I continue that trend, I will be happy! I will try the tail/comb method more methodically this year, and see how it goes!

Hello, someone on this thread is looking for Ameraucana hatching eggs, if you are selling some maybe you could work something out

I sent them a PM .

These are my 3 wheaten ams, about 2-3 weeks old. Here are my guesses on their genders so far.

set 1- this one is light colored so i'm going to guess PULLET

set 2- this one is very dark so I'm guessing ROO

set 3- this one is very light and I'm 90% positive it's a PULLET

Don't shoot me... and hopefully someone else more experienced will chime in and correct me....

(I have only raised one set of Wheaten chicks)

They ALL look like boys to me. Just a blue wheaten, a black wheaten, and a blue or maybe splash wheaten.

Wow, most look more green...
Remember that colors may not display true on your monitor - for many reasons, but for one, we don't know the quality of the scanner or camera used to take the picture (No offense rainbowchick :) ), and your monitor's color scheme could be set differently. Aside from that, "blue" encompasses a wide range of colors. The sky is blue, the ocean is blue, flowers are blue, but they are all different colors of blue.

The Ameraucana is a fairly (in the overall scheme of things) new breed and the Standard is something we all strive to achieve, not something that is present in its entirety in any given bird. In fact, I don't think I've seen even a picture of the perfect Ameraucana, more or less seen one in person. The color of the eggs they lay is only one part of that Standard of Perfection.

Early, but I'd say yes, you are correct... my guess so far is 1 and 3 pullets, and 2 is roo... regular wheaten, yes?
