Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I hope you don't think I was suggesting you had done this? I wasn't! I just thought you might know the outcome if someone does sell a split as a black (not knowing what they really have) and it gets in a BBS pen. If there was any way to tell. Sounds like there isn't and the only way one would find out is if a lavender pops up somewhere down the road. Two black splits could produce a lavender, right? That would be one way to know? Thanks.
ok I don't know what you mean by a 'black split'......would you splain it please?

My understanding is a black split is a black bird that is carrying a recessive lavender gene. Cross two splits and you would get 50%splits, 25% lavender and 25% black. I need to find a chart somewhere because I'm having trouble understanding how this one works. Like the split x black = 100% black.
Because if that's the case a split in a BBS flock wouldn't have any impact if bred to black. I wonder if that would hold true for being bred to blue?

You paid $40 for two BW chicks?
Well, I'm going to disagree with your statement. I sell purebred Ameraucanas for less than that even full grown birds!
I paid 50 once for a BW pullet and I will never do that again. I was ripped off big time on that purchase and it was a listed breeder.
I guess it all depends on what people will pay in your area, but around here, I'm lucky to get bites on $4 a chick and people will rarely pay more than $15 for a pullet or hen (lucky if I get that), purebred or not. I think $4 is pretty dang cheap considering you pay at least $3 at feed stores for chicks that aren't even labeled what breed they are most of the time. Usually just sex linked chicks I would think. It seems to be the same breed of birds every year.
The $40 for two juvenile BW Amers was two years ago. Looks like prices have fallen considerably since then. I talked with an Amer breeder that wailed on me because I was not breeding the show history background of the juvenile I recently purchased. I never said I was getting chickens as breeders. There are a lot of volatile owner temperaments re their Amers and sensitivity about their stock and their prices. Thank goodness there are some even-tempered breeders on here talking calmly and sensibly about their experiences. It also helps us understand what the quality and going rate is on the market too. All input and experiences welcome!

My chicks also are $8 each and I believe Paul Smith prices his birds in the same range.

IMHO, it's all about a fool and his money......

I don't buy shipped chicks and only get 3 m/o juvies or older so the prices are understandably higher for my case. I don't like taking the chance with shipped chicks (which obviously is cheaper) so I pay the higher price for juvies/adults. I have yet to find a breeder willing to sell juvies/adults for only $8 each.

Just a slight correction regarding price statement -- I paid $50 + shipping for a show stock juvenile from COLORADO shipped to Calif - so the price is not SoCal prices but Colorado prices. I got a gorgeous Blue pullet - it's a shame I'm not zoned for roos too!
For just one juvenile? And how old is Juvenile?

Neverind I saw your later post lol..

Not always easy...especially a few years ago... to get breeders to respond to buyers they are unfamiliar with. I know, because when I first tried upgrading from ee to decent breeding stock, i couldnt even get an email back in response from any of the most well known breeders.... One doesnt need to be a fool to overpay.
