Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have one that will climb right up in my lap once she gives me enough time to settle in. As for not being pooped on......well........at least I had on rubber boots and it didn't happen in my lap, LOL
Ha! I'll consider myself lucky then. Yes. Sometimes she doesn't give me time to get settled or comfortable. She will walk up to and stand on my foot till I pick her up. Or to be carried tucked like a football. I joke with my husband. I can call her name from across the yard and she will come to me better than my dog who had been to obedience school!

Okay, so a few have mentioned how hard it is to get good stock even when you're desperately trying to get breeders to respond. It took me forever to find an Ameraucana breeder who would reply to me - any ideas why this is the case? I have not found this to be the case in the past with other breeds.

I can shed some light on this topic . Myself I have a mental list of red flags on inquiries . This is a hobby not a business for me . I eventually get burned out on dealing with people . I limit what I offer on a breeders list and prefer to do egg auctions . If you do a mass mailing to several breeders or do not specify a color variety that is red flag . I get requests for I need a rooster . That tells me you have no idea about color varieties or shipping costs . Plus spring is busy time . Many times we are overwhelmed by requests .

I agree with Jerry, we get overwhelmed with requests. As breeders our flock comes first. If we happen to have some pens not producing well, then we need to work on it and keep our birds for ourselves.

I get people that are just interested in the best blue egg and I don't answer those e-mails.

I also get people requesting birds during breeding season. The available birds are gone by winter; people have to think about timing. There are different climates in the US, some start their season earlier than others and some have a longer laying season.

If you continue to keep in contact with the breeder, they will get to you if they respond. It might not be when you want it, but have patience.

my brats lol. Thanks to mr paul smith . I got lavs n blacks n wheaten n blue wheaten.

I finally did get hatching eggs and hatched out exactly what I was looking for. The thing is, I didn't send any mass emails, didn't mention egg color, and specified I wanted the W/BW variety. I can't imagine I raised any red flags! Pipsandpeeps, you were one of the few responses I got, so thank you! All's well, though - I have a few adorable Wheatens growing out... the only problem now is I want more!

I can remember just one time I didn't get any response to an email I sent via a persons website. Maybe I asked too many uncomfortable questions.

I think I have always answered emails from people. Sometimes, if extremely busy, I don't get around to checking my emails for a couple of days, but I still respond.
Funny, because even after answering, I sometimes do not get a response back.

It could just be a matter of people not having a smartphone attached to their hip like so many today do and taking a day or two longer than most expect to answer back.

Looks like my order from last year, but you have more wheaten than I did plus I got splash. My splash and lavs have turned out to be my favorites. My lav rooster is wonderful. He is very docile and sweet to the ladies. My blue roo, I tolerate and he is no gentlemen. He has a job to do, come H--- or high water...as they say in the south. When your babies are a week old, take a picture of the tails and the no tails group so we can predict the sex. I am still testing the theory. So far, I am above 90% on my own flock.

I need to get some updated pics to post, but a quick question. Mine are now 8 weeks old. Longer tails = rooster? Going back to the pics I posted seems I was pretty close to right
