Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I'm really happy with the size and feathering of this chick so far. It's lav over black and I'm wondering if you ever see differences in the down of your splits?

There are so many spots of yellow around the face. Normal or problem? I know it will end up black. Just wondering if it means anything for future/breeding.

Thanks!

The yellow means your birds are based on extended black . Black extends into these white areas making them black . There is no way to tell lavender / black from black . Lavender is a recessive diluter of black . Two copies of the lavender gene dilutes black to lavender .

well at 14 weeks, I'm pretty rock solid sure that my 8 chick purchase did indeed turn out to be 50/50 roosters and hens. Here's a few pics of the roosters, sorry a couple aren't real clear. Cell phone camera and chickens that act like teenagers who don't want their pic taken, LOL

I am going to advertise 3 of these as I only need to keep one. Is $20 a fair price for a 14 week old pure bred blue ameraucana?

Same as most other breeds, the cockerels will have bright red combs by 10 weeks, but it usually happens well before then. The pullets turn red and develop combs somewhere between 14 and 18 weeks. Saddle feather should start to be visible by around 12 weeks. Hackles might come in at that same time or a little later. Sickle tail feathers should be obvious by 14 or 15 weeks.

Awesome thank you! Does the same go for EE? I got 3 blue, 1 splash, 2 olive eggers and 1 EE all at the same time and she said they were all 6-9 weeks. Didn't right down each ones hatch day! And that was 3 weeks ago... So they are all at least 9 weeks. And the EE is bright red!

I've seen pullets go for that price up to $50 but for cockerels finding them a good free home where they won't be someone's dinner will be the best to hope for! When we rehomed our Breda boy we were thrilled that our friends wanted him as a housepet - they're vegetarians! People serious about breeding stock will pay money but those looking for a free chicken dinner won't pay a dime! GL with rehoming these beauties. The Blues are really gorgeous birds!
