Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

@dstokely
You said to let you know about the sex of my two Wheatens. It turned out to be one of each. You thought it was going to be two pullets based on the tail. Now, I think your theory pans out here, though, because in person I could tell that one of the tails was significantly fuller than the other but that didn't seem to show up on the pictures.

Also, of anybody in the Kentucky area wants this sweetheart, we can't add another rooster to our flock. He's a gorgeous Blue Wheaten hatched from breeder eggs. He is free to a good home, and we travel the stretch from Indiana/KY/TN/NC a lot because of spread out family.

Have you found him a home yet? I would love to have a purebred Ameraucana. So we can have some full blooded Ameraucana babies.

I am so frustrated and sad. I had been wondering why I wasn't getting many blue/green eggs when I should have had 4 hens laying them. Turns out that my 'Pure Ameraucana' ladies are not so pure after all. :/ One for sure lays a cream color egg, the other I haven't caught in the act of laying yet but I'm sure she lays a cream color too. I'm frustrated because I bought them from a breeder here on BYC and sad bc I don't have alot of room for my girls and if I want my blue eggs I'll have to sell them and the roosters I kept. :'( I even hatched out some babies from the roosters hoping to get some EE'S from my other girls. Now I'm not sure what they'll lay....

This happened to me.... My first ameraucana to lay, yeah, that was disappointing. Supposedly it doesn't have to mean that they're a mutt, I've read that it could just be a mutation in the genes preventing the blue gene from being activated. Who knows. I ended up keeping her, and now she's my granny hen. Needless to say, my new ameraucanas are from better stock!

So I have two questions.
1: what is the ideal amount of "splash" on an ameraucana? I have one that has a lot of color on it, and another chick that has maybe five feathers total with blue. Which one is preferable?
2: am I right in assuming that this 4 week old chick is a cockerel? That's an awful lot of pink for my liking...

as was mentioned, it could just be a gene mutation. I'd wait to get rid of them to see what you get from the eggs you hatched, you might get your blue eggs there! good luck!

There is some pink isn't there? Makes one suspicious. I don't see three rows...yet. I don't think there is a standard for splash Ameraucana yet. However, judges have noted nice color on some shown. So, I think a nice even splash of color is preferable. Those with less color likely carry stronger genes that wash out the blue. They may be useful breeding to black if you are looking for a lighter blue bird. Here is a couple of examples of what I think are nice looking splash.
