Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

There is some pink isn't there? Makes one suspicious. I don't see three rows...yet. I don't think there is a standard for splash Ameraucana yet. However, judges have noted nice color on some shown. So, I think a nice even splash of color is preferable. Those with less color likely carry stronger genes that wash out the blue. They may be useful breeding to black if you are looking for a lighter blue bird. Here is a couple of examples of what I think are nice looking splash.

Wow! Beautiful birds! The little one I posted about has a lot of blue coming in, so I'm excited about it... Unless it's a roo, then I still have to get rid of it

Sheena Mills, I love your chicken Angel, and you're right she is beautiful! I also love Easter Eggers! I have a few and I can't wait to see what color of egg I get out of a couple of them. I have a Leghorn EE and she lays a real pretty blue egg, one every day.

This is for anyone. I know how to spell Americana, it's auto text that doesn't know how to spell it. I'm on my iPad right now and this is the way that it spells Americana. I know that it is spelled Ameraucana and I just don't feel like going back and correcting auto text. It makes lots of mistakes so maybe that's why people don't spell it right.

Feed stores and hatcheries sometimes intentionally misspell Ameraucana to make people think they are getting the real thing. So then people post what the feed store sold them as 'Americana,' on this thread. They don't even realize that the breed name was misspelled, and that their chicks may or may not lay the blue eggs they were counting on.

Feed stores and hatcheries don't usually print their signs from an ipad.......

ok so a hatchery advertises online, on a computer that could incorrectly spell something because of an unrecognized word in spell check. If I am the boss and have an employee who posts something that represents my business like it's run by uneducated people because he was too lazy to correct a spell check error, that guy might not last long working for me. Lot of difference in representing a business and typing on a message board.

on the other hand, as already pointed out, they'll also purposely misrepresent to be able to get a little more money by making the uneducated consumer think he's buying a purebred. It happens all the time, we see it here a LOT

not trying to be a snob about it, nor the grammar/spelling police either, BUT the uneducated appearance of this country becomes more predominant every day through the things I read and hear. It's really become sad that we've either become a nation of people who didn't pay attention in 3rd grade grammar class, or too lazy to fix the obvious errors. It used to be things like to, two and too, their, there or they're.....now I even see people put 'are' instead of or.....that one really just bugs me, LOL

ok off my soap box. It could be a dishonest company, or one that has lazy employees. Either way not someone I want to do business with

Aren't some hatcheries now selling real ameraucanas? I think blue. How good is the quality?

There are some places calling themselves hatcheries but really are more like brokers where they represent private breeders - case in point MyPetChicken or California Hatchery. These may have some of their own hatching facilities but also are brokers for rare breeds like Empordanesas or true Ameraucana birds which will be priced much higher than EE chicks - so far I've only seen BBS Amers offered on their websites. For the 7 other SOP Am colors you have to go to a private breeder. Most hatcheries only offer EEs but call them anything from Araucanas, Americanas, Ameraucanas or blue-green Egg Layers, etc. For our APA Blue Wheaten we went directly to a private breeder when we realized the misrepresentations or ignorance on big hatcheries' websites. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having EEs but if you are breeding than these can't be used for APA SOP Ameraucana breeding.
