Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I appreciate that. You are always so direct and to the point that it kills me, but I value your advice. That's why I asked, I didn't know if I should cull the purples. I read the excerpt of the standard on the breeder's club page, but it doesn't go into nearly the detail. I like reading, and I will get the standard, but it's the quick, raw responses from you that make me want to learn more.
Now, if you tell me that the other thread hasn't made you laugh at least once, you are a liar

I'm not a breeder but recently on another BYC Black Copper Marans discussion thread (about page 1097 onward) there was a discussion about purple/blue/turquoise vs green sheen with some discussion about the causes. And yes, their conclusion was that green sheen is desireable and purple is not in ANY black-feathered chicken breed. I don't breed but keep chickens for pets/some eggs - my birds are all pure breeds from private breeders. I don't seek out to have black feathered birds since we have brutally hot summers but that doesn't stop me from appreciating the beautiful sheen I see in photos of black feathered birds whether it's blue or green. I do appreciate the breeders' standards however and now am educated that green is desireable and blue/purple is not no matter how lovely. Love these discussion threads!

Can anyone tell me if this rooster is an authentic ameraucana? 4 months old. Just started to crow

Many people think they are purchasing/acquiring "Ameraucana" when in reality they are buying from uninformed breeders who were sold chicks labeled as "Ameraucana" from hatcheries when the chicks were really Easter Eggers labeled as "Ameraucana" "Americana" or "Araucana" - shame on the hatcheries for duping people that the chicks were not really true APA Ameraucana. There are a VERY few hatcheries/brokers that sell actual APA Ameraucanas today but they usually are higher in price than the average egg-layer breeds and always seem to be posted "out of stock". Your EE boy is gorgeous but don't breed him if you want true APA Ameraucana. I think EEs are lovely in their gorgeous landrace colors but for a true blue egg layer I spent the $$$ to get my Ameraucana from a bonafide Ameraucana breeder. We love our Blue Wheaten Ameraucana (my avatar at 5 months old) - she is not a huge bird but appears large because of all her fluffy downy feathers and comparing notes with our friends who have Ameraucanas and EEs we find the Ameraucanas a bit nicer toward their flockmates. Our Ameraucana is a kooky spooky jittery wary alert sentinel in the flock and chases feral cats out of the yard yet is the kindest member toward other flockmates - nurturing, non-combative, and accepts newly added flock members without incident.

As a start you can research photos on the internet of the 8 approved APA Amer varieties www.ameraucana.org and some other Googled breeder sites showing what APA Amer's look like. One of the breeder colors I rarely see are the Silver Amer's or the Brown Reds. Anyone own or breed Silver or Brown Red Amer's they can post on this thread? What I've seen primarily as favourites are the BBS's or Wheaten/BW's.

Wasn't somebody tracking chick's tail feathers to sexing? My blues are almost 16 weeks, I can say I have one male and two females. When the two females had tails and the male didn't start getting his tail for almost another week later.
I read this early on either on this board or the EE Sexing board. I use this as my first estimation on what I have. It has worked very well for me. I used this for my latest hatch and the ones I have remaining were determined to be female, and best I can tell at 9 wks, they are female. I will know for sure when they lay or crow.

So we received these guys in the mail today. They are suppose to be a trio of blue wheaten ameraucanas

But I'm having doubts that my rooster is actually a blue wheaten. :/

My lighting not great. He looks darker in person.

Any input would be appreciated.

That's what I think too. Bummer we paid extra to buy started chicks just so she could send me a blue. I already have a wheaten roo lol.

I'm sorry. I have blue wheaten roosters if you want one. Pips&Peeps/Paul Smith rooster over Cree line hens.

I am keeping one of the two older roosters and the other will need a home. They are around 5 1/2 months old. I also have a younger one that is around 3 months old.

If interested PM me. I am near Grass Valley, CA.
