Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I agree that the pips and peeps cockerel is gorgeous and if my cock turns out that nice he's going to be around a while- long enough to try to figure out his genetics.

Thank you jerry! Maybe blond. Maybe cream. I'm going to try to find some local Wheaten Ameraucana hens in the spring, but if he mates with the girls I have I will run some hatches sooner. I'll keep you posted if you're interested.

Always interested in genetic oddities .

Thanks. They are still a little skittish, but they will eat from my hand. I'm trying to spend more time with them to tame them a little. If I herd them into a corner, I can pick them up and they will calm down pretty quickly, but I can't just walk up to them and pet them

Ameraucana's trust in their human will take time. Ameraucanas and even EEs do everything and learn everything in their own sweet time because of their inherent cautious nature. Once they've decided you aren't chasing them but offering them treats away from the other breeds they finally let you pet and pick them up without having to corner them. Amer's settle down and coo when you can finally catch them to hold them but I prefer doing the slow painstaking approach to gaining their trust and not chase or corner. My Blue Wheaten trusts me to pet and pick her up now but my DH still hasn't earned her total trust and she's over 2 yrs old. He loves the chickens but he likes the curious friendly outgoing girls more and gets slighted when he tries to feed treats to the Amer. Very unusual and peculiar breed these Ameraucanas and I love the people that have the patience to work with these jittery but sweet birds.

Color of my chick? She-he is supposed to be ameraucana. Gender anyone? Age 4-5 weeks

Where did you buy her from? Splash are a solid black bird with two copies of the blue dilute gene. The double dose of the dilute turns all the black light grey or white with darker blue feathers scattered throughout.

you sure? Shes different from my former EEs.
Supposed to be a splash ameraucana. If not, I'm going to complain to the company who sold her as a full breed.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of companies out there who advertise that they sell Ameraucanas when, in fact, they are easter eggers. Nothing wrong with easter eggers, but when you are paying for, and expecting, true Ameraucanas, as well as a specific color of bird, it is a disappointment.
