Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I agree with all that was posted here... and the problem is much more and beyond hatcheries/feed stores... Google is a click away, unfortunately a lot of info online is not correct either... and if someone doesn't know the proper spelling, they'll really get some misguided info too...

BYC is a learning forum... it is our choice to join and understanding that, we each take a bit of responsibility in helping others learn... are we busy? Of course... do we always have time to explain things out so others understand? No... but we can choose whether to make a fast and hasty post just to slap a label on someone's beloved bird or refrain and let another who does have time answer... or if nobody does, come back when you have time and explain then... yes, it is repetitive and tedious... but better to repeat oneself than to perpetuate the confusion...

Blame is quickly spread anywhere and everywhere, but I feel one thing is overlooked... we shoulder some of that too... as Ameraucana breeders/owners/lovers I feel it is just part of our own responsibility to keep educating others properly in the breed we are trying to keep flourishing...

But this is all my own personal opinion... :)
When I bought my first Americanas, I didn't Google or research. Why should I have? The feed store said they were Americanas. I think a lot of first timers to this thread just did the same thing. I learned here what they really were, I am grateful to those who taught me, I still love my EEs, and I have a darn good start on some BBS Ameraucanas :thumbsup

@RavynFallen

@scflock

Hello you familiar faces! I just came on here to talk about the Ameraucana flock I'm trying to start, and to see if anyone has Khaki(Mauve) Ameraucana hatching eggs I might purchase in the future. Preferably one with the SIlkie feather mutation or split for it.

I came to this thread to find out what the difference was between Ameraucanas and EEs. I too, was sold Ameraucanas that turned out to be EEs. And my favorite hen grew into a Roo! I am looking for eggs mainly and second a "cute" chicken. I want chickens that are reasonably friendly and lay decent eggs. When spring comes I will cull my flock and keep the ones I like best. I would like a true Ameraucana only for the egg color. and the cuteness of the breed. I come here to learn about chickens as this is my first chickens. The different chicks are fun to watch as the main Roo will stay out of the coop until ALL the chickens are in. Some are friendly and others are standoffish.

I think part of the reason people would get offended is because the terminology is different for this breed compared to BCM or others. When a poor quality BCM is posted on that board the critics will point out the flaws, say it is not standard, and recommend not using the bird as a breeder. Here, the response gives the bird a whole new name, which is not a breed. Pet quality is what is used in domestic animals but doesn't quite work in all corners of the chicken world.
I'm in complete support of this board pointing out Easter Eggers, like scflock mentioned. I didn't take offense to any of your responses because I'm here expecting critique. The title of the thread is friendly, and I think you all have been friendly about it.

Here is my viewpoint. In addition to "other breeds", I have a bunch of pure BBS Ameraucanas, and a bunch of " easter eggers". I like them both. The ams lay turquoise eggs, and so do the EE's, though one is laying green eggs. The eggs are all the same color on the inside, and taste the same. I do sell eggs for eating, and I put a colorful assortment in each box. When I sell eggs for hatching, they are only from select breeders.
When its culling time, you can't tell the difference between ams and ee's after they're plucked.
Enjoy your chickens and eggs, and don't worry so much about labels.

I, and 99% of my customers want pretty chickens that lay pretty eggs. These BBS Ams are aimed at bringing in a different customer

There is no end to the entertainment value of them all. Love to watch my chickens!

Yes,I know in the big city you can ask crazy amounts for chickens and people will pay it. I have found out around here you are lucky to get 10.00 for a young hen and spend $20.00 in feed to get her there!So you would have to draw in the few that want different! I don't sell many chickens but find I can sell turkey chicks.I try to sell a few just to support my addiction! lol I pay much more in feed then I ever make but it helps. Chickoholics anonymous! Anyone want to join me!

What happens here is pullets of any breed sell for $15, but you can't sell breeder quality for much more. No one is showing. What I find with my better birds is people will drive further to buy them, so that opens up Charlotte, Asheville, Columbia, and NE Georgia for me :thumbsup

I've got a solution for the EE/Ameracauna problem. Maybe 1/2 breeds are EE, and full-breed/not standard should just be called "Ameracauna-not standard" or something :)
