Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

After doing much reading, I've come to discover that my ameraucana hen is probably not a true ameraucana, but ...

... that being said... an ameraucana by any other name... will still lay a blue/green egg.

I have not been able to find any pictures of other birds similar to the one I have. She's got a black head, and is black from the mid-body to tail, but is gold around the neck and breast & her feathers have a pretty pattern, almost like a golden-laced wyandotte but not exactly. She has dark legs, which I understand are referred to as "green", though they look kinda a greenish-blackish-charcoal color to me.

I would love to post a picture of her, but she's the most camera shy of all my girls. It's like she knows I'm trying to get her picture and runs like heck the minute the camera comes out.

Maybe she's mad because I named her Bertha. LOL.

She was sold to me as an ameraucana, but truth be told, she's probably an Easter Egger. Still, that doesn't bother me because I'm still going to call her an ameraucana, and here's why: My dog--Ginger--she's a mutt, but she's chocolate lab/blue heeler mix mostly (her father was a pure blue heeler, and her mother was a chocolate lab mix). She has chocolate lab coloring, and when I take her to the vet, they classify her as a "lab, chocolate, other", and we refer to her as a "chocolate lab mix". So maybe my ameraucana is "ameraucana, easter egger, other". We can refer to her as "ameraucana mix".

In any case, she's a really pretty bird & I can't wait for her to start laying eggs. I'll post a picture of her as soon as I can get a good one.

Thanks, Kansaseq! Hamlet is a sweetie! He hatched from eggs from the Gardners and is a fabulous rooster. The first round of his offspring are just now hatching and I am having great fertility rates and hatch rates. I couldn't be happier with him!

Hellena, I bet someone on here has a bird that resembles yours. Can't wait to see her picture

Ps I love my Easter Eggers!

I had a d'uccle do that once, and as it turned out it was because his tummy was too fat...after a day or two and he finished absorbing everything he had in him from the yolk, he was just fine!!

She's fine now! I did notice what a fat little belly she had at hacth. That must have been it because her legs look normal. Yay!

3chimama, those look pretty easter-eggie to me. No matter, they're gorgeous & I'm sure you love your birds.

Ok, I got a picture of my Bertha & I uploaded it, but I can't figure out how to add it to the message. I'll have to read through some threads to find the instructions. It's not the best picture/angle of her, but it's one I could get for now. Like I said before, she's camera-shy.

I had to get this shot with my cell phone through the chicken wire.

Let's see if this worked.

I visited the Garners in Ringgold, GA today. Brought back a bunch of nice pullets for myself , Holly & Tracey. They still have LOTS of babies to sell- many of them are sexable. Tons of itty bitty blues running around too.
