Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

On the chick pics:

If the parents are both Wheaten, the chicks will be Wheaten.
If one parent was Wheaten, and the other Splash Wheaten, the chicks will be Blue Wheaten.

That way you know what they'll grow up to be, but he chicks will look the same until their feathers start to come in.

Wow! Thanks so much!! That REALLY helps to see them side-by-side like that. It's my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), that the blue wheatens will tend to have a slightly bluish tint to them as compared to the wheatens. Is this correct? Does anyone have a pic of a wheaten and blue wheaten chick side-by-side?
Thanks again, everyone! This is really helping a lot. I appreciate it!
By the way, MrsBachBach who posts here lives in NW AR and she has quality stock. She is also great to do business with. I know she has BBS and Wheaten/Blue Wheaten and I think at one time Silver. You might want to check with her since she is relatively close to you.

What about Blue Wheaten and Blue Wheaten?

If anyone wonders why I am spending so much time here tonight, I am in the waiting room waiting for the arrival of all my chicks. I have 8 in the brooder, another just hatched and is in the incubator and another seriously pipping. I cannot go to bed with all that action going on.

Sorry, guess I misunderstood your post above about the pictures of the different Wheaten chicks on the ABC website.

Hope you have a great hatch!

I think you answered my original question, but when you answered, you gave the results pairing of W/W and W/SP and I was wondering about the pairing of BW/BW. I did not connect the dots to the BBS chart.

Hatch has been good so far and much better than I have had in the past with my old incubator. I kept my humidity lower this time as well. So far, I have 12 of 18 with the majority of them being blue when I had wanted splash and black. Although I had studied the chart, I still put the 2 of my 3 splash with my black roo, thinking I would get prettier/darker splash. I got blue, which was the only thing I could get with them, and seems like my black hen did not lay as well as the splash. In my other pen, I had one black, one splash and two blue hens with a blue roo. It appears that most of those eggs have not hatched, and this was my two year old roo. Today is day 22, so not sure if I will get more.

Blue Wheaten/Wheaten/Splash Wheaten follows the same rules as BBS. Same gene, different pattern.

Duh.....I did not connect the dots with the BBS. Thank you so much for rebooting my brain. Maybe the visual will stick with me. In my current hatch, I have many more blues than I wanted because of my pairing. They are pretty and healthy and I know my young Hawkeye, black roo, is doing his job.

I was told that there is no way to tell them apart as day old chicks and that you might get any of the three.
However, when I went to the ABC site, they showed different chick pictures for the Blue Wheaten, Wheaten, and Splash Wheaten. Any one care to elaborate? ABC site is Ameraucana.org. Alliance is AmeraucanaAlliance.org.

Some breeders will have designated pens for producing only splash (splash x splash), or only blue (black x splash), or only black (black x black). If they know what pen the egg came out of, then they know what color the chicks will be when fully feathered.

The same holds true for wheaten/blue wheaten. Wheaten x wheaten = 100% wheaten, wheaten x splash wheaten = 100% blue wheaten, splash wheaten x splash wheaten = 100% splash wheaten.

Aww, you have a Hawkeye!

Hawkeye was the name of my foundation wheaten cock, from Jean Ribbeck's lines. Best rooster I ever had. Such a caretaker of his hens and I could put young cockerels in there with him and he would teach them how to be gentle with their hens and gentlemen to me. Still miss him.

This was my Hawkeye, when he was still a teenager...
