Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

What do you think about this splash? She's 10 weeks old, don't mind the raised comb I saw her mother and she had the same one...just not the best breeding, from what I am told by the breeder. However I think she is starting to get a bit pink even though her feathers look girl to me?

Darker feathers in the wing and tail say male to me...

I wonder if you have an olive Egger there! Look at those feathered legs. It looks pullet enough at this point.

I thought that as well, although I'm almost certain he keeps them separated but I do know he bred olive eggers this year. Guess I'll find out!

I was almost certain it was a pullet until just this week almost overnight she started to get pinker in the face. Made me think uh-oh.

Thanks for the opinion though, fingers crossed :fl

Pinkening of the comb at 10 weeks can happen in either gender... Jerry's guess of the 8 week old pinkening is usually indicative of cockerel that early...

That one could still go either way... however, the comb, feather stubs and sparseness look to beard and muffs I wouldn't use in breeding Am's... whether it's possibly an OE or unwanted traits cropping up, I just wouldn't use that bird if there is any other alternative...

You wouldn't use this bird for what? Breeding? I'm only interested in eggs. Definitely the consensus is she's a cross, must have gotten mixed into his OE batch. She was in with his Ameraucanas but it really doesn't matter to me either way. Actually I'd be happy with an olive egger considering I have almost all Ameraucanas.

I'll post her pics again in a week or two.

You probably need to wait until about 14 weeks and then start parting the feathers on the back going toward the tail area. You will be looking for the start of sickle feathers which will come in "pointy" as opposed to the more round or oval looking hen feathers. Males will start sprouting those pointy sickle feathers and that is a 100% sure sign it's a male. Or a crow. Although I once did have a female that would crow(a poor one) and act protective like a male. But the sickles are a sure sign.

I'm editing this to correct my terminology. I must be getting old. NOT sickle, but saddle feathers! Looking for saddle feathers! Geez....

Hatched 4 ameracauna chicks, in 4 different colors. Anyone have guesses what they will end up being? Supposedly the rooster is splash, and the hens are blue, lavender and wheaten. Photobomb chick tho. LOL Such a cute lil face

Sorry, yes, I meant I wouldn't use the bird for breeding... for a layer is fine, lol... I would look for saddle feathers like Mrs. BachBach suggested, they should come in soon if male or not if female...
