Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Possible, but not probable. See above post. She likely did the genetics of these birds in herself by not being a breeder and paying attention. They have gorgeous eggs, but their physical traits need work. Some to the point they would not be good to breed to the better quality one which is the black hen. It would be easier to get a better roo than to work out his bad physical charachteristics. Takes ALOT less time!!!!

NO, these are the original birds that Whitmore sent two and a half years ago.

They are NOT some that were bred after they arrived here in Tennessee.

Evergreen Farms does NOT breed any of their own chickens. They buy day old birds from established farms with high reputations, house them during their peak laying years, then rehome them when they get too old to produce the high quality eggs that Evergreen sells.

yeah...I'm sloooooowly catching on to that. I think they were less than perfect cull birds since they were going to a layer flock. THAT actually makes sense. I don't care, they'll make beautiful EE's. I bet that roo and the white hen will make pretty babies! I forgot he has been a bachelor all his life...his attitude may just be the hormones kickin into overdrive with him hanging out with 3 women now....maybe a bit of attitude adjusting will settle him down some if he doesn't settle on his own in the next couple weeks. I still want CityGirl's extra roo though to pair with the black hen. That should be a good match, and I will have both Ameraucanas and EE's going then. YAY! All this thinking has made me tired

Hi, today we acquired our first Ameraucana chicks (we hope they are, at least

I've really wanted to add in the tinted eggs to my brown laying flock.... (my hubby finally agreed!)
All I really know at this point is that they have grey legs, pea combs, and fuzzy cheeks.. and are SOOOOO cute!
We purchased them from a guy that raises Ameraucanas that he shows locally... but i'm very new to chickens (1 1/2 years) and know less about Ameraucanas.

Here are pictures of our 6 new chicks.. any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. (we have sex-links, buff orps, buckeye and other crosses - guineas too)

The black one with the lacing is exactly like one that came out of birds from show stock I used to have. He was a black Ameraucana, but his gold base color bled through all over the place in all these weird patterns. He came from properly colored parents out of Cree Farms lines. Sometimes, it happens that way. Makes him no good for breeding, though.

Oh, Ray,

your babies are Gorgeous!

Enjoy those beauties while they are young. Oh, sure, they will grow into beautiful adult birds, but their young chick hoods are something you can never get back again. I weigh my little chicks and photograph them weekly during their first couple of months, because I know they will not be little chirpers for long.

Your pictures make me yearn for the time when my own birds were just chicks. That short period of time when the little fuzz butts chirp merrily in their little brooder, before they move on to the big girls henhouse ...

Alas, it will be springtime before my husband (Mr. Barry) will allow me to have more little fuzz butts. He says 15 full grown chickens is enough for this family.

So you enjoy your own little fuzz butts while you can. Cuz they will grow up quickly, and you will have only your memories and your pictures to remember their chickhoods with.

Ray- there is some possibility for the blue ones, but I think the others are EEs. Lots of breeders- including myself- raise ameraucanas AND EEs- so maybe you got some of each. The light one almost looks like a wheaten, but the legs are a bit green. It looks like you'll have a lovely little flock there!

What age do ameraucanas typically start laying? My wheaton and blue wheaton girls are almost 18 weeks now and are getting a lot redder around the face.

This guy you posted above:

I had one exactly like that out of good true Ameraucana stock. Black sire, blue mother. His gold base color was popping out all over the place in wild patterns like that. He will be no good for breeding, though, unfortunately, unless it's just a backyard flock and everything goes (nothing wrong with that!).

one of mine was about 7 months and the other is about 8 and still waiting

I have 3 that are 9 months and either never started laying, or they are hiding their eggs in the woods.

I know the one that started laying fairly early has only laid ONE egg! She is still amazing though. She has been winning at shows so she can stick around lol!

NEWS: I have officially hatched one new bantam ameraucana chick! 2 are pipped, and one died in the shell
