Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have 3 that are 9 months and either never started laying, or they are hiding their eggs in the woods.

I know the one that started laying fairly early has only laid ONE egg! She is still amazing though. She has been winning at shows so she can stick around lol!

NEWS: I have officially hatched one new bantam ameraucana chick! 2 are pipped, and one died in the shell

Hey guys, I just got some blue and black Ameraucanas and I have a question. Is Splash a recognized colour or if you breed blue to black and get splashes, are they not true Ameraucanas? I am trying to figure out the BBS thing, bear with me here lol.

Well- you won't get any splashes unless you breed blue to blue. As far as I know, they aren't an accepted color- but they are a natural part of the BBS color scheme. If you don't want them in your flock- I'm sure you'd be able to sell any splashes to someone with just blacks that want to make blues. Or use them to make blue easter eggers with other breeds

black x black = 100% black

blue x black = 50% blue, 50% black

blue x blue = 25% black, 50% blue, 25% splash

splash x black = 100% blue

splash x blue = 50% blue, 50% splash

splash x splash = 100% splash

I have three ameraucana pullets 10 months old that I've had for 3 months. 2 have never even started to get red faces or do any type of laying behavior. The other lays eggs sporadically -- a couple a week, then nothing for a week. A couple of weeks ago, she started to get broody and had a hidden nest under our shed (she squeezed into a space about 3 inches to get under there:rolleyes:). When she finally came out last week to get something to eat, I grabbed her and have kept her jailed in the coop and adjacent pen for the past week. Let her out today and she ran, flapped, flew and basically went nuts to be out free ranging again with her sisters. I hope we can "trust" her to be a good girl now.

I don't know if they'll ever really be good layers. We just figure that they are very sweet and pretty pets and accept them as is!

I think the general consensus is that splash will eventually be an accepted color?
I am absolutely loving mine and all the variations they come in. Officially accepted or not, many folks actively seek them out.

I wish splash would get recognized I just love the color but don't have any! It might help if I didn't have a black rooster LOL and black hens!

Update: one fully hatched chick, one still hatching, one died after hatching (idk why), and I think six more to do something

my one hatched chick died!

I have a idea why but I don't know if it has any merit.

I think its because I had an egg explode in the incubator? do you think? I removed as soon as I found it but I don't think I caught it in time. I have one chick still hatching but I don't see him making it. How do you spot bad eggs? This happens alot with me more that I think it should

You take them out at 10 days if they don't look like anything is growing inside. All of the bad ones I've had are obvious. I usually have eggs that never develop. I've only had a couple that quit (very obvious bloodring) and one that never pipped but was fully developed.
