Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Crap that would be like a 4-5 hour drive from me

I had my "lead" young Blue Ameraucana cockerel (16 weeks old) try mounting one of the splash Ameraucana pullets today.. He has been the only one crowing for over a month now. None of the others have even started crowing yet.

I think I will keep him, because of his early maturing features...

The pullet was not interested and looks to be not ready to start laying yet.. (Which I do not expect at 16 weeks with Ameraucana's..)

I am really liking these Smith birds..

The first gal appears to be a black ameraucana. I believe the middle two are easter eggers.

Not sure on the roo, the best way to check is the bottoms of the feet. Are they white or yellow???? I haven't seen that much leakage on a bird since I started breeding and his eyes are very light.

Pips&Peeps~white feet, but if I can, I would like to get a better roo...it's just easier, and with my work schedule easier is GOOD LOL! I think he is a decent roo for someone who has the time to work with him, but I would personally rather not. He has attitude issues too which I would rather not breed into any pure birds I may get. These were given to me, so I am at no loss. The lady who gave them to me wants some Spring chicks, and I really want to do this right, ya know? She did not know any more than I about Ameraucanas OR EE's when she purchased and I agreed to breed them for her in exchange for the original stock. This roo has attacked me a couple times in the 5 days I have had him....which is NOT a trait I want to keep if I am breeding Ameraucanas. I thought he may settle down, but so far......not so much. I think a different roo would be best. I have a home for him if/when I get another roo. I'll just sell the ones I have in the bator as EE's and work on getting a good roo with that black hen for Spring chicks. I hope her egg factory doesn't shut down before then! I think she is around 3 which is not a very productive year, but not impossible to get offspring. I just needed to KNOW what the next step should be, and am very thankful for ALL the great responses!!!!!!!! You all are so sweet!

Cindiloohoo- I have a 6 week old black ameraucana in my grow out pen that is starting to look suspiciously roo like about the comb. His daddy is a blue AM from the Gardner line and his mama is one of my Riddick hens (likely one of my black girls). He will be needing a new home shortly as I am full up on roosters. The other roosters I have hatched from this pairing have been gorgeous and good sized strapping lads.

I'm not sure where you are, but I am about 20 minutes southwest of Murfreesboro. I forget how far southwest you are in TN. If you are interested, we could probably figure out a meet up place. He is a really good natured boy so far and I'm going to want him to go to a good home.

I agree never keep a mean roo. You should be able to find a suitable replacement for him in the next month or so.

I have black and blue gals in my flock that are over three and they still lay; not every day, but enough for me to keep them and still hatch chicks from.
