Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Mine I have no real size issues on my silvers..they are real nice sized and the roo is big.He's real mellow.The silvers my kids played with as chicks(Jean's) are more calm but still think the feed in the dish on the other side of the fence is better...my only real issue with them.None of mine are the shy hiding type but they would rather have their toes stepped on than be scooped up.By flighty I mean they like to fly and are good at it..they are also great free rangers.They will go out acres here where most of my other Ameraucana's stay closer to home. For me covering the runs is not possible they are way too big so I would have to have different housing for them if I want to breed them..next year my schedule is so full I'm limiting it to 2 new big chicken prison's but my extra silvers will be EE's until fall when I get a covered prison for them.I LOVE the silver's just putting them on hold for a bit.

Dixie is small, so was her sister, Delta, bless her soul. Dixie flies over our picket fence to get treats at my neighbor's house and I guess it's almost like joint custody of 2 chickens. Sometimes my neighbor puts sunflower seed out for Dixie and Willow (an EE) and calls them to come eat. However, when Dixie comes back home, she usually hops up on the deck rail and takes a flying leap from the highest point. That's not so bad except for when I have trays of started seedlings on the deck rails. This Spring, she knocked off most of my tomato and pepper seedlings--all heirloom or hard-to-find varieties.

Thanks cottagegarden. Any close-ups anyone? Possibly from the top?

Also, I read on another thread that it is sometimes possible to determine which birds carry the single comb gene by them having a not quite right pea comb. I have a lav and a lav split cockerel whose middle row is prominant and thick, and their outside row not being complete. Would this assumption, be correct in most cases. I would hate to cull the lav, as he is a BIG boy, at least as big as the blacks he was hatched with if not bigger.

I honestly wouldn't know, but I read that single comb happens when there is no gene for either Rose or Pea comb.......???? Anyone care to comment on this????

You have silvers too?!! OK, it's time to take a trip to Washington! I know you said to wait until spring so I will. Is Easter time good? We have family in oregon so it wouldn't be a huge deal to pick up some babies then.

Can the silvers clear a 6 foot fence? I have a few fliers in my flock but to tell you the truth I get the biggest kick out of them! They look sooo happy when they are let out in the morning! My high flyers can clear the 4 foot high run fence but not the 6' high fence. Most of my birds love to fly around the yard but just a few can clear the lower fence. I used to clip 1 wing but I quit when I saw how much they enjoyed this.

Hi. Just taking a chance.... Would anyone happen to have a standard buff ameraucana pullet or hen that they would part with??? I have 4 roosters now and only one hen that is old. Tried getting hatching eggs shipped and out of 2 dozen (3 different shipments), I ended up with 2 chicks. Both of which are beautiful, but roosters. Not wanting easter eggers, have to be true Buffs. I am in Central Wisconsin and will be going to the international poultry show in Portage, WI at the end of this month. Would be perfect if someone had one and we could meet up there. I also have blue/black ameraucanas (Paul Smith and McKinney Govero lines). Just curious. Thanks.

Now- does this mean that the parent stock has some clean faced or badly coloured birds in it?? I really wonder because I think a third (or more) of bad quality birds might mean the parent stock is just bad?? Or is it possible they have good parent stock and these are just a bunch of woops'?

they are truly beautiful birds but that need for freedom really runs in them...they thrive on free ranging.I don't clip wings since we only leave them in breeding pens for short periods of time..can't stand to see caged animals and we have all kinds of wild critters waiting to eat..the girls need wings.

In April I should be going to Stevenson, it is near Portland.

I may have some buff pullets available this fall. They won't be my best, but they will be something you can work with.
