Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Yeah, that's trippy. I have never seen white toward the edges-only like that. My guy still has lots of feather shafts around the head.

[Ed. to add - - I am also still providing 20% chick starter as an option for the younger birds - - they have two feeders now, one with layer pellets and one with chick feed. I also feed Manna Pro conditioner as a treat a couple of times a week for extra vitamins. Can that affect feather color/condition? I dunno.]

Here is a picture of our Ameraucana boy hatched out from HappyMtn at the end of April 2010 so he is coming up on 6 months. Our youngest calls him "Tuff", he is the top one out of our 5 boys(not all the same breed). What is he considered a Wheaten or Blue Wheaten?

waiting to see if the little wheaten pullet will be laying soon- her comb has gotten red but she is still on the tiny side and her wing hangs down yet.

hens&roos- he's a wheaten- looks like he's nice and round too! I have some that age that are still too lean.

I can't get a close up of the feather shafts on the blue guy. (stupid camera) I'm pretty sure he's leaking silver, but it's just around the neck. It came in all of a sudden. It's such a perfect birchen pattern- odd!

I actually have a chick out of him already- a blue frizzle. I'll have to see if she shows any leakage later on. From my experience though the males tend to show leakage more often than the girls do.

Ah I miss those wheaten chicks already..they are so sweet. We have Sam Remy's brother. He's finally found his home with some pullets
Now a question for Jean on Lavs...I hatched a few lav/splits a few months ago..Amy took the lav chick but one black hatched with a single comb...if lavs are hatching single comb is it a reasonable assumption that the blacks with straight combs would be carrying the lav gene? I also have a black bantam from the same breeder as Remy who also has a lav pen with a straight comb eggs were BBS thinking maybe they had a split in the pen or mixed up a few eggs

I had purchased 11 what I thought were leghorn/cochin mix this past spring. To my surprise I had 2 Ameraucana hens, well then one of the "full blooded" leghorn hens purchased earlier, started to look like a rooster of sorts, which I was not familar with. The other night my Leghorn Rooster and this "hen" had a bad fight, "hen" won. So I started too look online for different types of roosters, and what did I find, yep I have white Ameraucana Rooster. So now I know.
They are separated now, and will be forever!! But I am so glad to know what I have, it has been fun see the different types of chickens, but not for those "roosters" I am sure.

So he should be paired with wheaten girls than if we decide down the road to work with him?

Wheaten, blue wheaten and splash wheaten.

Just like blue/black/splash- they all go together.

You would think so, but I wouldn't put money on it. All birds here at my place that hatch with the straight comb are gone. In fact this year, I sold all my chicks that turned out black from my lavender project for $2.00 so I wouldn't have to mess with them. Since there is no telling if they are black or lavender.

I don't want to take the chance of mixing any of the wierd genes into my black birds either, they have been worked on for so long and mixing whatever comes along with the lavender gene just doesn't seem to be a good idea at this point; maybe in the future, but not now.
