Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I'm not into wheatens.. but that wheaten boy with those beautiful hackles... WOW...

I wish I could hatch any out of my Beautiful Blue Wheaten that looked like that... .I had one that was close, but then the hackles turned straw and the comb got floppy.

I don't think so. I think she has mixed birds in the blue color. In the picture below from her site, the splash bird has green legs.

Araucanas are rumpless (no tail) and quite rare - Also they don't have beards or muffs. And far as I remember, they're pretty rare in Canada.

Sorry, I meant Ameraucana.

Devon , while the ad is worded strangely , it states they are americana EE , derived from Ameraucana , and I [ think it ] does a reasonably good job of letting potential customers know the birds are not Ameraucana . On the other hand , if Ameraucana are extreemly difficult to obtain up there , those are close enough to work with and with some hard culling and possibly an added Ameruacana roo you could end up with a decent flock IMO .

Ive been growing out a lot of Ameraucana babies this year, trying to get another roo to use. Seeing Mrschickendad's rooster sure give me something to shoot for! So far this is the only one that has made all the cuts....he's about 5 months. I wish he were wheaten instead of blue wheaten, but thats a minor issue.

I'm joining this thread! I'm joining this thread as an Ameraucana owner!! This is a big moment for me, as the first "Ameraucana" I bought turned out to be a White Leghorn, and the second "Ameraucana" my BF bought me was, of course, and EE (which I knew before he even brought it home). Ironically, the Leghorn went broody and hatched out two Ameraucana eggs I got from Halo, along with five Blue Plymouth Rocks. Finally!
Halo - one has definate brown feathers coming in on the wings, and the other still has hardly any feathers coming in yet, so I can't quite tell on that one. If the second one is a boy you can take a look and see if you want him back!

I will take a picture of the two of them later and post it so you can see. Thanks again!

I like him Halo! Looks like he has nice clean hackles- no black! I have a wheaten that looks identical- still needs to fill out a bit.

It looks like I *might* have gotten a blue ameraucana in my order of blue copper marans. (they raise them too) Not like I need another color, so if it's a girl she'll stay with the marans or go to live with Holly.

Question for the BBS people: how come some blue birds have white pin feathers come in when they molt, and some don't? One of my cochins still has some white that's slowly disappearing after 2+ months, and my bantam blue (ameraucana) roo looks birchen at the moment. None of my other blues have done this. They just look "off" for such a long time.

Chics, look at the feathers coming in on the back of its (note I didnt say his) neck. I have found those are more definitive; the wing feathers can be confusing. Might be a bit early on those feathers.

Ive been posting my excess roos on Freecycle, and they get snapped up, so if you end up with one, you might want to try there.

Thanks, Happy. Ive had a difficult time getting one with reasonably clean hackles. I had a few boys that were bigger and broader, but had black all over the hackles. I had to decide if I wanted to breed for better size, or better type. I know everyone always says to build the barn first and then paint it, but if I keep a roo with incorrect color, then Im adding that gene to my herd, and would think it would be very difficult to get rid of. On the other hand, if I keep a roo that is as correct as I can get for now, I can use him over my hens, who are good sized, and hopefully that combination will work. You just never know, tho.
