Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

OK random ramblers, heres a question from a newby to the Ameraucanas. I guess I could ask the breeder but since I'm on here I'll ask away. I just got some Wheaton/Blue Wheaton Ameraucanas and knowing the 'blue' gene as BBS wondering what to expect from these chicks. I got two batches, first are gorgeous, I have wheatons and blue wheaton but second batch can't tell yet. So I am assuming I could get BBS? Is there such a thing as Blue Splash Wheaton? or Black Wheaton? So, what is the color spectrum on these? Probably been discussed but havn't read the whole thread. Could someone explain briefly?

To tell the difference in females:
Wheaten = black in primary wing feathers and tail feathers
Blue Wheaten = slaty blue gray in the same feathers
Splash Wheaten = those same areas are white

Works just like BBS in solid colored birds.

Here are some pictures of my birds from this morning. Man, it is freezing here today!

Very nice looking blues, QuailHollow. I love your barred cock, too - he's beautiful.

You have more snow than we do - bare ground here in New Hampshire, although I don't think for long.

This guy is too wide in the back end. Have you crossed the birds with orpington or wyandottes? His comb also looks strange for a pure ameraucana and feathers look very loose.

Pretty bird though.

QuailHollow, do ever get any Blue Barred EEs from those birds? I saw the Barred EE pic, but I couldn't quite make out if they were blue?

IF by chance you do, I would LOVE to get some of those eggs from you! I really want some Blue Barred birds, but I haven't been able to locate any near me.

Lemme know, okay? I'm really not looking for right now, probably a couple months down the road into the springtime.

Thanks!

My new blue cockeral had slightly snotty nostrils after the show , but recovered at home that weekend so went in a pen with my splash and a bunch a girls . The splash tore him up and the blue , now minus most of his heavy beard and muffs , went sick again a few days later in this cold weather . I found him standing by himself , tail straight down , every feather standing out , snot running from his beak into what's left of the beard , and looking like death itself . I brought him inside , said a prayer , started him on tetracycline , and by the third day he was crowing and looking as good as possible with half his beard and muffs missing . I'm so very grateful !
