He's a Splash Wheaten.

Illia is correct. That is a Splash Wheaten. Even though the pics are small and not very detailed the coloration matches a Splash Wheaten and not a Blue Wheaten.

I do not agree that this is a Splash Wheaten rooster. This is a Blue Wheaten Rooster and right now he does not have good coloring for representing the Blue Wheaten color variety. BUT he is only six months old!!!
As he matures, after a full year, he should have hormonal changes that will enhance the redder feather coloring in the back area.

Often times, I have read on the ABC forum where Mike Gilbert's (former ABC president) advice is NOT to make early decisions for culling roosters. Wait until they are fully mature.....1 full year or better and then decide. It could be that his coloring will get better and conform more to the correct coloring for the Blue Wheaten variety. If not, cull him from your breeding program because of his faulty coloring and replace him with a Blue Wheaten or Wheaten of good coloring.

There is a great picture of a LF Splash Wheaten rooster on the ABC forum owned by Barbra Campbell. www.ameraucana.org
The Splash Wheaten looks almost Red Pyle in color pattern. Red - White - with a little blue and a little black feathering

I think it is the photo that is throwing people off and perhaps the beard looks bluer than it should. Jean is absolutely right, a picture of the breast area will settle the matter.

I still think it's a SW though. The back area looks way too white to be a BW and the tail looks just like a SW. Look at the tail on the pic that Sooner Dog posted and it looks the same as John's bird. It is true that a SW Ameraucana looks very much like a Red Pyle but one has to keep in mind that there is some variation in SWs. I've had a few and they've all been a little different. One had so much orange lacing on the breast that it wasn't even funny.

So John, see if you can get us a close up pic - especially of the front on breast area - and that should settle things once and for all.

God Bless,

Won't they fight if they are 1 year or better old?
