Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I do not agree that this is a Splash Wheaten rooster. This is a Blue Wheaten Rooster and right now he does not have good coloring for representing the Blue Wheaten color variety. BUT he is only six months old!!!
As he matures, after a full year, he should have hormonal changes that will enhance the redder feather coloring in the back area.

Often times, I have read on the ABC forum where Mike Gilbert's (former ABC president) advice is NOT to make early decisions for culling roosters. Wait until they are fully mature.....1 full year or better and then decide. It could be that his coloring will get better and conform more to the correct coloring for the Blue Wheaten variety. If not, cull him from your breeding program because of his faulty coloring and replace him with a Blue Wheaten or Wheaten of good coloring.

There is a great picture of a LF Splash Wheaten rooster on the ABC forum owned by Barbra Campbell. www.ameraucana.org
The Splash Wheaten looks almost Red Pyle in color pattern. Red - White - with a little blue and a little black feathering

Edited to show picture of Barbra Campbell's LF Splash Wheaten Rooster

Won't they fight if they are 1 year or better old?

It all depends on the bird. I have multiple wheatens in one coop and they are fine. My BBS however- one of them is very bird-agressive and will soon be culled. He not only harasses the other roos, but the girls don't want to go into the coop at night because of him.

Highly doubt it. I've got over 20 cockerels, half of them Ameraucanas, in the same living space and none have fought. They're about 8-10 months old, and I doubt they'll suddenly change just because they got a little older.

I think it all depends on the roos. Tried the roo pen thing and the BCM were very bad. Everytime I removed the cuprit, the next in line would take his place. They had a roo twice their size with his head wedged between the chainlink panels almost choking himself. Illia, didn't some of your Wheaton roos attack you black Ameraucana roo? Thought I saw a pic of him all muddy?

I have a question.

What color (genetically) are Silver Ameraucanas? Are they "silver duckwing"?

I'm playing with the chicken calculator...

I'm going to let go 2 of my roos- a black from AHappychick and a split/lav from Pips&Peeps, if anybody needs them. I might keep the split if I can get another pen together for him. We're having some personality clashes that I just don't want to deal with right now. If only the wheatens weren't such sissies.....

On a good note- I finally got an egg from my only Whitmore BW hen. It's more of a turquoise, but I'll take it! The older girls in the flock have been going overtime on the eggs since the solstice. Amazing how we went from famine to feast just like that.

Here's the lav/split guy. He's pretty, but he hates my Orloff. Maybe he's jealous of his speckles.

This is for jeremy.Silver has black stripes in the saddle and neck feathers of the roo.Silver duckwing does not.Same difference for BBR and light brown.Light brown has black stripes and BBR does not.Silver is correct for Ameraucanas.

Thank you! Now... how would I enter the genetic combo in the chicken calculator accurately for a Silver Ameraucana then?

'Cause I think I've been calling it silver duckwing up to this point.
