Probably depends on when you got lavs from Shaffer. I got mine in 2009 and half where still carrying the straight comb gene. The next year I hatch about 25% with straight combs. Obviously I culled all those and I am positive he did the same. He will probably still through some unwanted characteristics but thats part of the project. Just cull for what you want. He will bring a nice addition to size which mine are still lacking, and I think many other are also.

They hatched June 2010. One single comb out of 8 that hatched.

I haven't weighed my boy yet. I figure he should be starting to fill out now, so I'll wait a bit. Out of my hatch of Split/Split eggs, I got the one black rooster shown, one black boy with khaki spangles, one lavender boy that has developed cream patches on his shoulders and on lavender boy with a single comb. Not a very good outcome!

Thanks for the pep talk! The black boy is going to a friend/BYCer who will use him on her lavender Shaffer pullets and hopefully he carries the lavender gene so we can get more lavenders. Is it wrong to use the lavender boy with cream on his shoulders? Or is it OK to breed him to the lavender pullets and cull any chicks with improper color? I hate to give him up! He is such a pretty, friendly, sweet boy!
Here is a picture of him.

Hopefully one of the lav experts will advise, but I would think you would use him only if you have nothing better.

ditto with what dak said. You will need to hatch a ton of chicks and cull cull cull eventually you will get some solid lavs and continue with them.

I am thinking about hatching eggs from this trio. Can you tell me if they are Ameraucana or ee? any help would be appreciated.

BTW they are Bantams
