Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Standard says blue. Lavs are variable because they are early in their development and some brown egg layers were used in some lines to improve them and those genes have to be weeded out. I just send people pics of my eggs and let them make the call on whether the color is acceptable to them or not. Egg color is high on my "to-do" list and I have blacks in my pens for that specific purpose and will be adding more this year. My two cents.

do you have a ameraucana breeder club egg color chart?

Is there somewhere I can look to see the different genetics and what colors (this time I mean birds not eggs) they will give when mixed? I'm mostly interested in the Blue, Black, and Splash.

I have an image on my computer but I need to order the real thing.

I appreciate all the nice comments and encouragement. I like what I have, too, but I am also realistic about the improvements that need to be made.

Take this male. I personally consider him the best of my three lav males. But guess what. He's carrying a single copy for muffs. I know this because he's throwing clean faced chicks. Will I cull him? No, not this year. He's the best one I have right now. But I'm not keeping any of the clean faced chicks, either. Will I cull him next year? Yes, if I have something better.

You have to start somewhere. I posted pics of all my birds on the ABC site for constructive criticism feedback. I was pleased when I got it. My feelings did not get hurt when my birds were called "poofy" on this site, either. They ARE poofy! lol

I will also add that Buff Ameraucana eggs tend to lean on the green side. I have 5 breeds...Wheaten, Lav, Black, Silver, and Buff. There are others on here that can chime in on the other varieties' egg colors.

The Lavs lay the greenest of them all. The Buff hens lay an egg on the green side. The eggs I get from my Silvers are not only on the small side...they are VERY light in color...quick glance they seem white next to the other Ameraucana eggs. The Wheaten hens lay a beautiful light blue, but so far, none have come close to 2 of my Black Ameraucana hens that lay a sweet rich blue (1 lays a lighter blue comparable to the Wheatens). I personally prefer the richer deep blues than the lighter blues.

Who was saying recently that Blehm said the lighter eggs of the Silvers were the ones to strive for? For my own egg basket, I prefer color depth.

Thanks jeremy, and everyone else. A lot of dedicated, knowledgeable breeders have worked on the lav project. Some of them shared with me. I won't take credit for their work. Anyone can contact my sources which were Shaffer, pips&peeps, and Paul Smith, for top quality birds. Or me, if you happen to like the ones I have paired up

Best of luck to us all.
