Harry has dial up; his poor computer probably crashes everytime he looks! Ok Harry here's mine. The green one in the back and the greenish one in the middle (3 o'clock) are lavs. There is a lav somewhere in the sea of bluer ones but can't say which one. Most of these are Paul Smith and Jean Ribbeck blacks/splits. HappyMtn has been working with me on these pics. She still thinks I need to take them in the afternoon light, so I'll try that tomorrow. They look gray-er to my eye in person. So hard to capture correctly.

Ameraucanas newbie color question if you have a moment to answer.

I understand that I can put black blue and splash into a cage and the offspring are black blue or splash depending on luck and what colors I started with.

And I think I can put wheaten in with blue to get blue wheatens

And I can put black ( or blue) in with Lavenders to get Lavender crosses

But.

I have a white rooster and no white hen. She died.
He’s a lovely guy. He won some awards at the fair for my son. He appears to match up well with breed standards. And I want to keep him but I have no white hens and I don’t really understand white color in chickens. In cats it’s a dominant trait masking the other color genes that the white animal got from its parents. Is that true for white chickens? And what colors am I allowed to breed this guy with?

I have wheaten hens
And a blue hen
And a splash hen
And lots of lavenders
And one black hen
And one black lav x hen

I can order him chicks and get a hen for him in 6 months or more. I can put him in a pen with some hens and eat the eggs. What say you, ameraucana experts?

The general consensus with those who have been breeding the color a lot longer than I have is that this is not a good idea; stick to blacks with your lavs.

Only wheaten and blue wheaten can be bred together; a regular blue or black cannot be bred to the wheaten variety.

thanks to all of you for your help
to encapsualate

blacks only with lavs
wheatens bred with anything but blue wheatens or wheatens are EEs
white must be bred with white.

and I'll go look at that white hen posted right now.

thanks again!

Ok final count is in and we have 12 (out of 15 shipped) new little Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Ameraucana babies!

Question, one has more "chipmunk" looking stripes on it's back (even though it's still yellow) does this signify anything?
