Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thanks for everyone's opinion. My silkie is no show bird but a great pet. Thankfully she doesn't have the vaulted skull. Don't need that to worry about thank goodness. I'm just worried I may not b able to find another silkie. My first bird ever, Sookie, was part EE I believe. She's my avatar. She was the BEST. Now I keep thinking that all hens will be like her but finding out she was the exception. She would just sit in my lap for hours if she could. Or she was always flying onto my back or shoulder. God I miss her. Thanks again gonna give it a little more thought. Really want to find my hen a friend.

You say a store will have them. . . You're SURE they're Ameraucanas?

Ameraucanas as a whole are very tolerating breed that do very well with others. With people, I hear Silvers are quite skittish, have no clue about Brown-Reds, and from my experience, - Wheatens and Blue Wheatens are friendly, Blue/Black/Splashes are very friendly, and so are Buffs. Often the larger quantity you have, the less friendly they are though.

Yeah, store is Agway. They get them from MM or something.

They're probably EEs. There are a couple of hatcheries now selling true Ameraucanas, but most do not. Americana/Araucan/EE is often lumped under one name to market EE. I did notice a local Farm King was selling Welp chicks and correctly marketed as Easter Eggers on Welp's flyer; kudos!

We bought a new rooster and he seems to be very aggressive with our hens. He's about 7 months old. This is the first rooster we have ever bought and brought into our chicken flock so not sure if this is normal behavior. Normally we hatch and raise our roosters with our chickens and have never run into any problems with aggression towards the hens. We have him separate from our other chickens to quarantine although he seems very healthy. I felt bad for him so gave him two hens to keep him company. Well he immediately started being extremely aggressive with them. I ended up taking them out because he was just being so mean to them. The next day my husband felt bad and just gave him just one hen to see if he calmed down. He immediately stood on top of her. Not to mate her, just to stand on top of her. Like if she was a perch or something. Why is he being so mean? Is this normal behavior when bringing a new rooster to an already grown flock of hens?

MM usually stands for Murray McMurray. They're Easter Eggers, sorry. Also, MM gives the highest rate of brown or green egg layers versus blue egg layers with their Easter Eggers.

Need some opinions if possible peeps.

I hatched 2 lavender ameraucana chicks 8 and 6 weeks that have single combs and are pets for laying blue eggs (if girls). Does any of you experts have an opinion as to their sexes?

I know the combs will look huge to you guys being used to little pea combs. Can you see from the feathering? Sorry the pics are not great.
Thanks!

Both boys. Not all of us have only pea combed birds, those are boy combs.

Those are some pretty Orpington-y bodies, too. If you were serious about breeding, I'd get rid of them both.

I believe she stated that these a PETS for laying blue eggs.

Yeah, but if even if they were girls, the chances of them laying BLUE eggs like she wants isn't great, since the pea comb is associated with the blue egg gene, as I understand it anyway....

But alas, they are boys.

Hmmm, the single combed Lav that I had from a reputable breeder laid a blue-green egg. Bluer than some of my B/B pullets.
