Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Yeah, but if even if they were girls, the chances of them laying BLUE eggs like she wants isn't great, since the pea comb is associated with the blue egg gene, as I understand it anyway....

But alas, they are boys.

Hmmm, the single combed Lav that I had from a reputable breeder laid a blue-green egg. Bluer than some of my B/B pullets.

Lucky you!!

I don't know, I've never had any single combed Ams, I just read it on this thread I believe...

dak - Bite much? I was just stating. . . . And, a true single comb shouldn't produce colored eggs. I've seen pea combs that look like single combs though.

This what another BYCer who is uber knowledgeable on chicken genetics, told me on the subject of blue eggs and single combs:

more than 90% of US stock have the O gene(the gene for blue or green eggshells) linked to peacomb gene (and it's a very close linkage, rarely separating to recombine separately).
This is the reason why I deliberately maintained blue/green eggers in the large fowl.., they are all single combed.. unusual for US stock and is due to an event called crossover, when two closely linked genes happens to 'separate' from each other during cell division. probably won't be so unusual for long as someone apparently imported legbars- single combed blue eggers (also an UK breed.. and auto sexing.. you can always tell males from females right at hatch and it 'breeds true') Single comb colored egg layers are not rare in central and south america too.

Can someone please help me with this? I bought him off of someone on the ABC breeder's list and he is a beautiful bird. Is it normal for roosters to be really mean to hens when introduced to a new flock???

Do you have any Lavs?

Both the reputable breeders I got Lav eggs from, and I'm going to name names hear, sorry Jean and Harry, produced single combed birds OR birds that are now producing single combs so must be carriers. They are a project color. God knows, what may pop up next. For those who don't like surprises, I would suggest avoiding projects. But, as Illia LOVES to point out even recognized colors from reputable breeders produce clean faces and aren't some of you having problems with whitish eggs in the Wheaten variety.

I've got a half english orp/half ameraucana with a single comb that is laying a blueish green egg......

No problem dak, I know it happens and most of the lavender breeders do too, it will continue to happen since the pea comb is incompletely dominant. Hence the "project" label and not admitted to standard yet.

But, to the poster about the lav birds, I agree they look like boys, so no eggs to even guess about.

Once the connection of pea comb and blue egg genes is broken, pea combed birds can and have laid brown or white eggs, and single combed can and do lay blue or green. The two genes are thought to lay close to each other in the chain; it's not like they're glued together or anything.

It's not uncommon behavior. He's establishing his position as dominate bird in a new flock.

Thanks.

I was so worried we would have to get rid of him. So this is just temporary, then he'll be nicer. Good to know.
