Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

So out of all the eggs I bought and hatched (somewhere in the range of 40) I ended up with only 8 pullets...

This is going to be a big problem in our area this year. All of Mississippi drainage.
Have seen it in the past during very wet times. I have quit a couple of fishing and hunting trips over them. Very painful bite even on people. Not giant but in numbers it does not matter. Known here in Arkansas as "Saber Tooth Bull Gnat"

Sorry I missed your question. I moved here to the river bottoms to house sit for an extended time last winter, but have spent time down here hunting and fishing in my youth and lived here for awhile on property on the river. I've experienced swarms of mosquiitoes down here near the river many times, and the buffalo gnats that always bit some others but never me. This was the worst I've seen them, and they had not bothered my birds back when I lived here before. Previous to this, I saw a few gnats on the birds occassionally, but they calmly pecked them off each other. The day off the loss, there were scores of big fat ones on the faces of those dead or dieing; I did not realize it was the gnats actually killing them till it was nearly over.

I still haven't been bitten by one, but they drive me crazy flying around and in my ears, getting behind my glasses, and I've inhaled enough that I've started wearing a mask.

What a terrible loss! If these flies are like 'black flies' what a terrible way for your poor birds to go. Have been swarmed by black flies only once and never went to endure that again! Hopefully you folks in this type of area can find a way to protect your birds!

Play around with this... http://kippenjungle.nl/breeds/crossbreeds.html .... Select your two breeds and then hit "enter to calculator", then click on "phenotypes" and it will tell you what you'll get... warning, it's addicive!

So, this is tricky to use. Isn't there a step in there after you select the breeds where you have to go to "help pick color from list"? And what "kind" of silver should I select for the Blehm silvers I have? Thank you, thank you!

Ouch. That hurts. That was the story of my breeding program last year and it really wasn't fun. This year has been an entirely different story, though, so there is hope for you yet!!!

Questions Americauna folks. This photo below is from the Americauna BreedersClub website. It is supposed to be a silver hen. The feathers look mostly black , white and brown, not silver. It looks like an EE to me. I'm confused. Can anyone clarify?
Also, why is it that hatcheries supposedly don't sell pure Americaunas? Why would it be hard for them to sell purebreds? Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
