Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Last night when I got home I was busy cleaning house and ran out, just in passing, to work the chickens. Last thing I did was check Kalliopi in her nest. Expected hatch date is June 23rd but I found 2 halves of an egg and 1 pipped. I searched and searched for the chick and didn't find it. I was so worried they had canabalized it.

Mark was called and we looked and looked. Finally found the baby hiding so well UNDERNEATH her and within her feathers I missed it after my first big search. The other egg was pipping. I decided to leave it alone. I went out 2 hours later and found it almost fully pipped around. I went to bed.
This morning I found the 2 halves and the newest chick. Another egg is pipping but I had to leave for work.

I can't wait to get home and see what has happened.

It's amazing the coincidences that have happened with this hatch.
I raise chickens because of the love for them instilled in me from my sainted grandmother who raised me. This hen was the last one named and we named her after my grandmother, Kalliopi. She is the only hen who has gone broody. I will name the babies after her children, George and Denis. If they are girls, they will be Georgette & Denny.
I've got the fuzzy but fever!

why dont u keep him in there that way u get most ur chicks from the better rooster and put 2 hens with the other rooster to keep him busy

Oh yeah I just noticed that. Don't EVER just have one roo if you plan on breeding. Always keep a back-up. Use him for olive eggers or EEs in the meantime if you want to give him some girls .

I definitely want to keep both (one for a backup. I didn't last time and have had to wait on these boys to grow out forever!) and THOUGHT they'd do okay together since they were raised together. But poor blackbeard is literally "on the run" all day long. The other one just won't give him a break. (I had a hard time getting photos of him because he can't stand still for being chased for being out of the coop.)

I really want to "start over" with my new pullet and best cockerel from Jean. My hens are a full year older and they aren't about to submit to agressive whitebeard. No fertile eggs yet-though that doesn't stop him from trying. Blackbeard won't get near them! But the pullet doesnt' seem to mind him. So it will actually work out perfect!

Does anyone know where Blue Poultry got thier wheaten stock last year? They aren't selling them anymore (I think I know why) and there is no "contact" on their website

Anyway- I have decided to let go one more of my 9 month old roos from them. He's a lovely BW if anyone is in need.

I'm going to keep his brother. Working on a new color of ameraucanas- I call it "blurry"

Here's some of my juvies playing in the goose coop where the big birds tend to leave them alone. The big wheaten-looking one in the middle is Supercheeks, she's 1/2 wheaten am, 1/2 faverolle. Huge for a pullet. Hybrids are so fun!

I have SOOOOO many roos. Plus I am keeping the splash wheaten one from BP and I have 2 pullets as well. I think I had 6 boys and 2 girls in that order

The one pullet just started laying though nice dark turquiose-ish eggs, so he has potential. The girls are just starting to look overbred so he needs to go- quick!
