Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I'm looking for a dozen hatching eggs, preferably from blue or black hens. Anything but wheaten, some nice blue eggs to use in my olive-egger project. I'll poke around the for sale listings, but sometimes I have trouble navigating that one.

I have heard a few comments about the ABC. It seems like the Ameraucana community is fairly slow to welcome newcomers. I am sure that breeders are wary of giving out birds or information because they are afraid that newbies like us are going to muck up the breed with "pretty" EE's....... Which is probably true in many cases

I truly don't think that it is because they are slow to welcome newcomers. I think it is exactly as DAK said, the folks running the club are volunteers. They have lives and they are busy. Although we pay to join, they don't get paid to welcome us. Life gets in their way. There simply isn't enough time in the day to get it all done. I too know how that feels. I know they have made me feel most welcome, truly, even though I'm a pain in the butt. I didn't pay much attention to how long it took but I am also one of those folks that can be rather a big pain in the butt. I'm impulsive and always in a big hurry so I bug folks. So all I can recommend at this point is poke at them, as I did, let them know you are keen. They WILL respond and they will welcome you.

One of my "Ameraucana" pullets laid her first egg today- a light peach egg.

From a breeder who seemed to know what he was doing, and sold me some beautiful blue hatching eggs to go along with the batch of fantastic looking Ameraucanas I bought... so I assumed they were all the real deal. I know sometimes a pullet's system is still sorting the whole egg business out- any chance this egg was a fluke and she will lay blue next or soon?!?! Or am I just wishful thinking? It was either a blue or a black Ameraucana pullet. Looks like the real deal. The adult hens he sold me all lay blue eggs.

I believe if the blue egg colour isn't there from the beginning, it probably isn't going to show up later. But "crap" happens. We are all working to build birds and egg colour. Sometimes the genes just don't work the way we hope they will. Ameraucanas are still a relatively new breed so things don't always work like we wish they would. You may just have to move this pullet to your layer pen and move on. Doesn't necessarily mean the breeder mislead you.

Speaking of egg color. I hatched 2 Ams in Dec from somewhat greenish eggs. I'm not sure of their sexes yet, unlike my BCM and muttlys these are taking their sweet time about growing combs. Just wondering, IF I do end up with a pair, is there any hope at all of bluer eggs if they are bred together? Or should I find some more from another breeder?

In my limited experience, I've worked with green egg laying moms and a blue egg laying dad (he hatched from a blue egg.) So far, first generation, eggs are the colour of mom's (finish from dad.) I'm lead to believe the colour might change in the next generation but I haven't gotten there yet.

From my limited understanding, green is from blue+brown egg genes, and there are something like 15 different brown genes. So if you are getting green tint you have to find a way to eliminate the brown genes with lots of test matings and time....

I had the same problem with a wh/bl wheaten birds from 1 specific breeder (I believe the same one Reyvaughn is referring to).... the 1 pullet that hatched out of 10 eggs is basically crippled. She walks on the sides of her very curled toes. Oh and her tiny eggs were not even close to turquoise... but in fairness they were a well saturated green/blue (in the "c" range on the color chart)

Question was asked of me what you get when you mate blue to black and blue to lavender? My guess is blacks across the board, but I really don't know. Anyone have an idea?

I love this thread! I will soon be getting some pure ameraucanas from a breeder, unforunatly they are straight run, is there ANY way you can sex day old chicks? Any idea welcome!
