Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The only way to make them stop is for everybody to stop buying their chicks or for everybody who does buy them to complain. I watched the name change from Auracana to Auracana/Americauna because tons of customers contacted the Hatcheries and said "these are NOT Auracanas, they have TAILS!" Soooo... the hatcheries sort of stole the name Ameraucana, some changed it to Americauna, and continued selling the chicks.

Some hatcheries have changed the name, or at least added "Easter Egger" to their name. This was done because of customer complaints. If you want to make a difference, everybody contact them - multiple times!

I've too have noticed that in the few years I've been raising chickens, some of the hatcheries have come around and changed the name to Easter Eggers. I feel pretty lucky that the very first eggs I ever hatched were a mixed batch from My Pet Chicken, and were properly labeled Easter Egger, so I never had to learn the lesson the hard way. I wish all the hatcheries did this. I loved my EEs right from the start, and never had to feel like I had been ripped off or lied to. Later after coming to BYC and meeting so many wonderful chicken folk, I started getting my eggs from reputable breeders.

Let someone who is willing to mentor answer the question. If you are sick of the same question, count to ten, and move on.

if someone wants to breed EE's that is their right!!

We all love our chickens, maybe for different reasons......... But, love them we do!!!
We try to mentor, it is usually fruitless because they then want to argue. They feel duped and embarrassed, and try to defend their mistake.

Breed all the EEs you want, no one here has an issue with EEs, just post about them on an EE thread.

I agree. I have no problem letting someone know they have an EE. It happens. What I do not understand is the argument that most people start right after they are told. People who I have never seen on this thread before appear to argue the Ameraucana EE thing.

I have been slowly learning on this thread so I hope this thread keeps up on all the great info. I feel I have been learning a lot here. I think I will just not read the arguments and skip ahead to the good stuff.

Hooray, in addition to my Mason Creek hatching eggs I am getting some from Showinbirds here on BYC from their very nice looking black show line, which were originally from Paul Smith

Hopefully I will have a good start on at least 1 Blue/Black pen come fall... my plan is to show them (any that are obviously good) this fall and next winter, and get help selecting my core 12. These will be from whatever I have out of the 60+ shipped eggs that I manage to hatch. Keeping my fingers crossed they both do well for me so I can consider adding a second pen of them

I posted my photos of my "white Ameraucana" chicks here and was VERY NICELY told that because one had green legs that it made them an Easter Egger. And I was also, right away, told VERY NICELY that I would still get very pretty eggs from her. And when I asked about what made them EE's, I was VERY NICELY told that they had yellow skin somewhere in their background, that's what made their legs green (one has slate but that's not the point. I got the point, which was, somewhere back there a Non-Ameraucana was added to the mix).

While I was bummed (mainly because the ranch I bought from made *such* a big distinction between Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers and sells birds separately as such), I truly appreciated the information. And the tone in which it was given.

Seriously, it's not the ABC's fault nor is it the fault of the breeders here if you end up with an EE when you thought you were getting Ameraucanas. It's disappointing, and sometimes maddening, but it's no one here's fault.

Now I'm only bummed because on the EE sexing thread they said not to send in photos of the whites. I guess they're too hard to sex as chicks? And also, this thread has cemented some decisions about the place where I get these chicks. This isn't the first time things have been a little off. So, my choice is to either accept them as they are (the breeders) or try and find someone else. I get eggs either way (well.... when they get the sex right that is! ;) )

They said it couldn't be done : )
(from my project to make barred Ameraucana)
Blue cuckoo / barred, pea-ish comb, beard and muffs, blue egg gene, slate legs.

Congrats! What a cute chick :)

I love the second picture, reminds me of the Holly wood event photo boards, and the chick looks forward and says, "I'm sexy and I know it."
