Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Have you tried fly paper? It hangs from the ceiling. It's a sticky, two sides spiral that you unroll to hang... I use it in my coop and barn. I have tried the fly bag traps but they were too icky for me, so I tried the paper and liked it much better. It's also pretty cheap!

Hi
I bought some of the most beautiful blue hatching eggs from a lady who only has Ameraucana chickens in her farm; no other breeds at all. The problem is she has all the different colorings (BBS, Silver, etc...) all in the same pen, so her hens are being covered by different coloring roosters.

Would my chicks still be considered "true" Ameraucanas or will they be considered Easter Eggers?
You might still get pure with luch but you could get some awesome crosses! and IMO it is true if you get a classiible color such as blue silver but that takes a very intensive breeding program.

Thank you. I knew some would be true Silver as they were the first chickens she separated, but she explained that there was the possibility that some would still be mixed since she had them together for the winter. So far I only had four hatch out of six eggs, but I think I ended up with all silvers as they all look to have the colorings of the Silver Ameraucanas. I'll try to post pictures and get everyone's opinion on what they think I have, all silvers or some mixed colors.

Hi dancingnancy, those don't look quite right for true silver chicks. I can't tell if it's because of the lighting or if they truly are that orange-y color, but a silver chick should look like the ones on the Ameraucana website. They should have distinct markings on their backs of dark brown, black, and white stripes. In the first picture you shared, it doesn't appear that the chick has that. Silvers are pretty hard to come by. I've been trying to get a flock of them going for about 2 years and have had chicks and eggs shipped and all I've got is my one Silver hen. I'm not sure why they aren't more popular because they are pretty and you can tell the sexes apart pretty quickly once they feather in.

I am working on Silvers, I LOVE THEM! I am in Vermont.

These are two of my chicks. My kids interrupted our picture day, but they all look very similar. Silver Ameraucanas?

They could be... since the lady does have pure Silvers. Watch them as they grow up. I have seen very few EEs that look like purebred Silvers when they are grown - the males and females are very distinct from EE adult coloring. You did see the Silvers when you were there?

Unfortunately - almost all of the EEs I had looked exactly like those chicks but they grew up with very different patterns from Silver Ams... so only time will tell if they are mixed.

I found some White Ameraucana's today and bought them. I only purchased 2 hen though that was all the money I had on me.
I have a Black Ameraucana rooster. My question Is can I get White and Black Ameraucana's breeding them together?

First generation - no. Unless the white ONLY hides black - and then yes. You don't know what is hiding under that white - its like a coat of paint. Two coats actually.

Second generation - Whatever colored son back to the white hens - yes.

Yes, she does have pure Silvers. She actually has all pure bred, no EE's or anything else on her farm. It's just she sticks them all together for the winter. She has them separated now, but like you stated, only time will tell if I have full bred or mixed coloring. Either way, I am happy with the beautiful coloring of her eggs and got them at a very good price due to the possibility of some being mixed. All the eggs were sky blue and beautiful. At least I know I will have some pretty eggs which is what I was after. I'm not too fond of the blue/green eggs and prefer the ones that are sky blue.
