Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

chickee,,
Thank you for the explanation, did you keep any of the pullets brothers? If so and you have a good one, using him over that pullet should lock in the good points she has and his as well, of course that requires that he is a good example of what you want in a cockerel.

I am new to this as well so maybe someone with the experience will chime in

again congrats on what you have, I always say "I'd rather be lucky than good" ,,,,,,you done good!

and yes, I did keep the best cockerel, out of 3 from this hatch. His type is looking good. Hard to tell on color since he is young and just growing back in feathers after molting. He is big! Almost as big as my golden cuckoo Marans rooster! I will try to get a good picture of him to post.

Today I was in my grow out pen, taking care of my young AMs. I like to pet them even though they dont like it. Too catch them I have to corner them and then of course they all run in terror. I went to catch one and it didnt run, which i thought it was odd. So i was holding it and petting it. Its i eye looked weird, so i looked at the other eye and then it dawned on me why the eye look weird and why it didnt run away when i caught it. It is blind in its left eye. When I went to catch it I was on its left side,so it didnt see me. I will most likley just keep this chick as pet as it is a huge sweetheart. But it is developing pretty feathers and looks to have good body type so far. If i were to breed it could it some of its offspring be blind/partically blind too? If so I will definatly not be using it for breeding.
What does the eye look like? Cataracts are not uncommon, especially in older birds, but there is also an eye form of Mareks. The eye looking weird would concern me. If you google "occular mareks" you can find photos that show examples

Thank god it looks nothing like that. The whole eye is like all one color. I will have to google catarcts. I have never dealt with either so am mot sure what it looks like.
