Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I would consider 10 chicks a small order that should be easy to fill. We had an order for 40 and it was several months delayed and I lost most of them due to heat/cocci issues. But I wouldn't hesitate to order 10- you should get that many anyway to increase odds of getting some good girls.

Wayne Meredith is in WI, but last I heard he did ship. I had buffs and wheatens sent to me.

i also consider 10 to be a small order. I just thought that i would state what the minimum was since no ome else did. If he is still taking orders in january i am going to order 10 or 15. I emailed him he said just all depends on how fast he get in orders.

I have a splash hen that is black predominately . She is wheaten on the rest of her body . She has very nice short legs with a rather compact body and a neck like a swan. Dose her color rule her out as a possible breeding bird? I'm showing my novice colors here? your advice would be welcome.

What very nice birds. I like that wheaten cockerel despite the red tail feather. He is a very handsome gentleman.

Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to the AM thread. I don't think I caught which color you want to breed? Splash in BBS must show no red (Wheaten) at all. If she is a Splash Wheaten then she should be all Wheaten (tan) with white and black only in her wings and tail (and maybe neck - but not desirable) You can look on the ABC website to see what the accepted colors are - and what you are looking for in your chosen color birds if you want to breed and show them.

X 2 to the above post

and a word of warning,,,

while you think it's cool to have the birds land on your shoulder and "peck" your face, they are birds,,,small little brains,,,when one of them pecks you in the eye (and I really hope that doesn't happen but it will) you will understand that letting them start that behavior is a really BAD idea

worse case scenario, would be that happens to a family member or friend that is visiting your yard
Thanks for your warning on the pecking but let me at least put your mind at ease on someone else getting pecked. I don't have any family around, other than my daughter (17 & senior) who helps when needed but doesn't really mess with them like I do. And I don't have any friends, so no worries there. Only 2 of my chickens are super friendly and, just my opinion because they're mine, seem to want to be on or around me. When I mentioned the pecking, maybe it was a wrong choice of word. My 2, pet like, chickens, Waddles & Muff, don't "peck" my face, as though there were a bug there. Waddles will brush her beak on my cheek when she is on my shoulder. I have had chickens most of my life, raised around them, and I know that they are still animals/birds. But I also have some that I wouldn't let get that close to my face!! I think Waddles is the way she is because she had a broken leg and was nurtured and cared for very closely with a lot of individual attention,as crazy as it may sound or hard to believe, that it's as though she expects it and doesn't know much difference. She doesn't co-mingle with the others and tries to follow me when I go inside. I have thought about bringing her back inside and having her as my indoor pet chicken. I have a tiny toy poodle who also nurtured and cared for her like a momma and they get along fine. I have read on here where someone actually house trained some of theirs. I think it would be possible with her because when I do allow her inside, she will get in the dog crate I kept her in when she was down. Any hoo, thanks again for your concern, it's really appreciated and good to know that their are still good people with good intensions.
