Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

If you are see purple in your bird you should not breed them. Green sheen is what you breed for. You can NOT tell a split by look. I have 75 or more that I have had over the past couple of months and if I could tell split from black I would be FLYING. they look the same. You can test breed them to find out but that is the only way.
I was talking about the down color and convinced myself that i could tell my splits ... I had a mixed hatch earlier this year and thought some of them had down that was lighter than the others and assumed that they were the splits... Next hatch were all splits and their down looked the same as the ones that I assumed were the splits the prior hatch... But looking back i think i saw what I wanted to see.

Unless you know what you are breeding.  I toe punch my chicks when they hatch so when they grow out I know which is black and which is split to lavender.

100% agree! I toe punch everything now. I have a pen with splits to splits so I get lavender black and splits so all he blacks are unknowns without testing them so they are getting sold as layers roo go to the roo guy.

Well finally I have something to show ;-) I have four Am. that I hatched out Feb 17. I took these pics last weekend. It looks like maybe 1 girl and 3 boys. Two blues and two blacks. Three birds from very blue eggs and one from a somewhat greenish one. I have four new chicks from the same breeder but different breeding pens. Will try and get pics tomorrow; today the wind is a killer, but those look like at least two or three might be splash.

Ok so I may have been a bit confused with the splits vs blacks when it comes to down color but at least I am sure of what these are, lol. Here are some of my lavs i hatched out from my trio this spring... I know the pic doesnt show very much but i am very happy with them overall. Time will tell but hoping i get a few keepers to add to the initial trio.

Hi Everyone :)

I am new to owning Ameraucanas. I have a couple of questions and am asking for confirmation on what I have in terms of the colors on these chickens.

This was purchased as a blue wheaton egg, but the "blue" is super dark (pretty much just black). Ive been told that the color will fade through molting. Is this true?

Which one of these is a splash and which one is a lavender?

The 1st pic is a super light gray color almost all the way through its actual feathers and the 2nd one is a deeper gray color.

All of these chicks are 6 weeks old

That is a Black Wheaten Cockerel. You will get black blue and splash when breeding blues.... it is expected. The bottom chick is lavender. I can't tell on the one above the lavender. When you say splash do you mean just splash not wheaten? I see some spots so it could be splash.

thanks for helping DMRippy! The one in the middle came from a pair that were splash (BBS) colored - at least that's what I am assuming since I didn't mark the babies after they were hatched. I just figured when they got feathers I would see a whitish bird with a bunch of paint brush strokes, but at this point I have quite a few that are that washed out grey color with no specks on the feathers yet.

Breeding splash to splash can wash the color out. they can eventually be almost white if they don't breed them back to black or blue.

Ok, well I know I have a couple of blues so when they get older I will breed the splash and blue together. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge :)
