Aww, you have a Hawkeye!

Hawkeye was the name of my foundation wheaten cock, from Jean Ribbeck's lines. Best rooster I ever had. Such a caretaker of his hens and I could put young cockerels in there with him and he would teach them how to be gentle with their hens and gentlemen to me. Still miss him.

This was my Hawkeye, when he was still a teenager...

He is beautiful. I would love to have one like him. I have my off-colored blue and he has a wonderful disposition. The Blue that is also with him in the brown egg layer pen is a real bully and will attack my husband when he turns his back to him. Probably because my husband only goes near the chickens when I am out of town.

Help, Help. First time with Brinsea. I have 18 eggs in there but it can do 24. The first little guy just hatched, seems ok, but still on his back. It is so crowded and he really does not have much room. I did a no-no and quickly opened it and got half the shell out so he is not so wedged. Should I be concerned he is still on his back? It appears this might be a little splash from my new black roo. I am asking here since SCFlock has so much experience with a Brinsea.

If it's from your black rooster, it's not a splash. Not possible.

Aww...little cutie. It does look like a splash. Maybe you have the wrong rooster as father? Unless it's a very light blue.

Actually, I had he first, but then since I really want hens, I decided to change it to her. I have hens until reality hits and they start to crow.

I think it's a girl.

That IS stunning. But I was talking about the chicks. I meant, will the chicks always present as that yellow-gray color if they're splash?

They can vary a bit. A yellow chick or very, very pale smoke colored chick.

LOL. I had to bring them in under natural light, to see the colors. That was the closest room. I don't open the blinds in the brooder room, because it can get too hot in there.

Wow! Thanks so much!! That REALLY helps to see them side-by-side like that. It's my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), that the blue wheatens will tend to have a slightly bluish tint to them as compared to the wheatens. Is this correct? Does anyone have a pic of a wheaten and blue wheaten chick side-by-side?

No, about the only way to tell a blue wheaten chick from a wheaten chick is, if they are at least a week old, you can spread their wings and see if you can tell from looking at the color in the wings. Black being wheaten, blue being blue wheaten. Even so, it is still hard to tell that way because I have had some I thought were one color and ended up being the other color. It is easier to tell when they reach about four weeks or older.

I've been thinking about this. I did not block off my two groups so it could have come from the blue roo, splash for black hens. That group has not hatched well and since I had the eggs numbered by group, I will have a better idea if it could have come from there. The only other possibility is when I built the new cage and separated them I had a splash that did not like her new pin and found a hole and went back to the other pen. When I went to move her back I realized later that I got a different splash. That was more than 3 wks, but maybe the blue roo's sperm was still there. I will wait and see if it is splash or white and have a good idea which pen it came from.
