I know you all know this, but it boggles the mind. I've called hatcheries in the past, go nowhere with them. They're like brick walls.
The same feed store, owned by a veterinarian and his wife, no less, advertised on the chick sheet (I asked for their scheduled shipments) that on a certain day in April, the first 50 kids in the door get a free chick. I knew I had to get out of there before I blew my top. That is irresponsible, if you ask me. Give a kid one chick? What if they have zero chickens, know nothing about them and they give them one free? Good grief.

Well, you have AMsI've been reading some our most experienced breeders posts on BYC. They don't even refer to some of their project birds as AMs. They call EEs til they meet the standard.
Yes....because they are reputable and knowledgeable. The saying "Buyer Beware" isn't new and isn't just about Ameraucanas. This kind of deception or innocent lack of knowledge is as old as mankind. Dogs, horses, cattle, plants and yes..... chickens. It is up to the buyer. I knew nothing when I bought my first chickens. I was really lucky! I went to a breeder that had some pretty nice birds, then to GFF. What I am trying to say is this will go on as long as there are buyers and sellers. We can help but we can't stop it.I've been reading some our most experienced breeders posts on BYC. Thank you for this, I couldn't understand why Lavenders were not called Ameraucanas. What is an Ameraucana Chicken? http://ameraucanaalliance.org/faq.html#One
A chicken is an Ameraucana when it meets the American Poultry Association’s (APA) Standard Ameraucana breed description AND meets a variety (color) description or breeds true at least 50% of the time, whether the variety is recognized or not. There are actually two breeds of Ameraucana: bantam and large fowl.
We also have a definition for Easter Eggers, so whether it is a so-called project variety or not it is of isn't an Ameraucana by definition. There are some that said lavenders were Easter Eggers because they weren't a recognized variety, but again it isn't true according to definitions.
