Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

@samouw

Garfunkel made it though his isolation/quarantine period without any hitches. Thank you for the clean, healthy Wheaten Ameraucana Cockerel!

I put all the olive egger boys out to be free-rangers so they wouldn't challenge Garfunkel, then there were the two days in a cage within the coop so the girls could get used to seeing him. Under supervision Garfunkel was let out into the coop with the girls.

There was a small disagreement between Garfunkel and the leading lady, Sassy, but once she realized that Garfunkel was the new leader she stopped challenging him. Her second, Kay, took a turn puffing her chest at Garfunkel, but she quickly learned that her brother was not there to back her up. Here are Garfunkel and Sassy eyeballing me with the camera LOL. They all are getting along well now.

One interesting thing I noticed about flock dynamics is that the girls at the top of the pecking order are no longer in charge since the male leadership has changed. The ones who were at the bottom see that Sassy and Kay no longer have their backup, so they feel free to challenge them. I love watching my chickens!

Oh, and I finally heard him crow. He sounds so pitiful right now. LOL

He's looking nice! Maybe next spring, you'll be ready for some nice wheaten and blue wheaten chicks to go with him. :)

I have never seen a female wheaten/blue wheaten color in like that. Is that an Ameraucana?

Garfunkel is my one and only Ameraucana that comes from show lines. I have three blues that aren't bred to standard. The chicken in the foreground is only half, she is my Sassy girl. Sassy's dad was a blue Ameraucana and I think she has blue base under the partridge color. Here is a full body picture of her so you can see what I mean.

Oh ok. I knew the male was and assumed he was with a female of his variety. That explains it.

I'm really liking this black cockerel. He's almost 4 months old and he's even getting more of a chest now. I think he has a good overall balance! Hoping he'll be my main man for my foundation breeding stock. He's also a sweetheart and I wanted to share his pic

I know it's still a little early but his black is beautiful with lots of green shine. No leakage either

Can someone explain the difference between an easter egger and an ameraucana? I bought some hatching eggs from a breeder on ebay saying they were purebred. 3 hatched. One white one looks purebred but the other 2 have the pattern I've been seeing on the easter egger section. Not sure if this means easter egger or its a trait they both share..

I had to do LOADS of research online and on the BYC forum to really understand the difference. Here is the short version LOL

Aracauna (I hope I spelled tat right) was the original breed developed from two chicken breeds indigenous to S. America. A small flock was brought to the US and there was a huge argument over what really was an Aracauna. After much debate, they made their decision and the breeders that had been developing fully tailed, muffed, un-tufted birds were left with a bird that wasn't considered a breed. So, after more years of arguments the bantam Ameraucana was FINALLALY recognized as a breed.

The easter egger is one of two things - (1) birds discarded from the Ameraucana breeding program because they are not to standard and they do not breed true, or (2) an Ameraucana or an Aracauna breeds with any other breed of chicken to create a mix that lays colorful eggs.

One more important thing to remember when buying an Ameraucnaa or Aracauna is that Hatcheries and people will lie. Just today a feed store said they had Aracauna chicks that they'd ordered and the moment I saw their little chipmunk stripes I told the guy that whoever he got them from lied to him. Those were easter eggers for sure.

@junebuggena can make any corrections or add/take away anything I missed. LOL

Were they advertised as Blue Splash Wheaten and come out of Michigan?
