Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Just sharing some pics of my lavender pullets. Also, curious if the standard allows for varying shades of color or is lighter (or darker) prefered.
Here are the 2 older girls. They just ate and rolled in the dirt so not the cleanest.......honestly no birds at out little farm are ever "clean" per se. But they're happy. :)

Very pretty girls... variation in the shades is allowed, I think an even medium shade is preferred... :)

Boxes are not good for little feet if not lined with paper towels or something they can grip. I would think they would interfere with air flow too? Idk, but I know of your dilemma. This is what I did to keep chicks separated. Get a piece of hardwire cloth small hole size and some wire cutters and make fences in your incubator. I secure mine together and to the bottom with bread ties/garbage bag ties. I make a small bend in the wire to make a base at the bottom of fence. You want to make up your fences and make sure everything fits before you start incubating. That way when it's time for lockdown it doesn't take a long time to put it together. If you use a auto turner during incubation, you can have your lockdown setup sitting there all ready to drop in. You can cut them as high as you need as long as they aren't touching the heating elements, make as many compartments as you need and they don't restrict airflow or humidity.
I've made those and used them, lol... work great... In a pinch though, the larger containers that fruit from the store comes in work well, just put a square of rubber shelf liner in the bottom and the tops snap shut preventing escapees... plenty of ventilation holes too... Or another breeder uses tied off nylons, lol...
Congrats on your hatching chicks! :celebrate I just wanted to mention something about the color on your hatching eggs. Do not discount the lighter ones. Those may have been from hens that have been laying for a long time and the eggs have faded considerably. They can still produce hens that lay much deeper blues. I was a little disappointed in the color of the eggs that my original quad came from as they were almost white, but the girls I hatched from them lay very pretty eggs. Their eggs are in the first picture and their offsprings' eggs are in the second picture:
Great points! I know if the eggs get in sun at all, even just a few mins they will bleach out as well... seen ones fade by end of incubation time too... And you never know, the cock may be contributing more towards egg color for the chicks that hatch out...

Ty Ravyn! I was going to post in the new thread that was started by Susan but because I don't show my birds I didn't feel it was appropriate ( although I really do want to breed to "standard").

I don't plan on showing mine either, but I want to breed mine to standard also. Susan is a very nice person, but some personal issues are causing her a great deal of stress right now. Anyway, I'm sure if you are serious (it sounds that way to me) I'm sure it would be perfectly fine to ask that kind of question on the other thread. But of course w e like seeing your beauties here too.

I appreciate that.:thumbsup

@MuscovyMadness
 Do you know how light a blue chick can get? One of my new chicks is so light that it looks like it could be lavender.

Edit - The parents are BBS so I'm sure it's a blue. Just curious though.

I wish I knew......I'm still a newbie myself. Ill try to post some pics of my blue kids later today. A wonderful breeder I bought a Lavender Orpington pullet from was in total disbelief when that pullet turned into a Splash just 2 weeks later! LoL. She has no BBS breeding program! I know that everyone will say impossible who studies genetics but in my opinion if God meant it to be......well, its gonna be! LoL. You can imagine how devastated I was when she was the first out of several we lost to a fox. I miss little Lexi (named because she wormed her way out of the box and wanted to ride in style in my old but still nice Lexus lol).
Here she us riding home. ...and 2-3wks later. Clearly Splash.

That is likely both Splash and Lavender. Some people don't realize that they are dealing with two different genes and end up breeding their Lavenders to Blues and Splash.
