Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thanks for the welcome. I've already learned a lot just reading and I'm finding the information so interesting. Even trying to decide on breeds and colors is fun! And it seems others find that part of the joy of backyard chickens as well. I guess the only way to know for sure is start and see how it goes lol.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes there is lots of info. So glad I found this site. It's been helpful already just reading about everyone's experiences. I do like to make good decisions when I can lol.

Consider the combs.
Orpingtons have large single combs and wattles.  These work like a radiator and the more surface area to the comb and wattles the better to dissipate body heat, so they do better in warm southern climates.
Ameraucanas were created in the Midwest as a cold hardy breed.  They have small pea combs and no wattles, so although they can take the heat from a normal northern warm summer they also do very well in very cold wintery weather without frostbite.
Just as Chihuahuas wouldn't do well in the northern climate and Huskies do well down south, some breeds of poultry are designed to do better in one by design.

Thanks for pointing that out - something I wasn't aware of at all. I want my chickies to have the best chance possible. No doubt I'll make mistakes but I want to give them a fighting chance at survival

Thanks for the correction and taking the time to share all this info with me. It's great to get this knowledge before I start. Much appreciated. The more I find out, though, the more I like them all ha ha. The Ameraucanas have really got my interest being non-aggressive and they are so beautiful. I think it must be fun to hatch some chicks and see what colours you get.
