Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thank you for your help. We wont be breeding these girls. We are only fostering them until they are 100% healthy and then they will be rehomed with our daughter. Our flock is not very fond of these new girls...we had to move them to the vacant pheasant coop.

Easter Eggers and APA Ameraucana are a sweet breed of chicken, known to be non-combative, kind to flockmates, accepting orphan chicks or injured birds into the flock usually without incident, rather cautious to almost timid in alertness. So that can make some of them a rather easy bird to get picked on. My Blue Wheaten Ameraucana was the perfect large fowl to mix with our docile Breda and Silkies. No one fought or picked on each other.
What breed are these girls? In November we received these two girls because the rooster of their flock had been so rough with them their feathers were almost 60% missing. They have healed nicely. But what breedare they?

I'm so glad you were able to rescue these girls. They are lovely. Probably not APA Ameraucana because the colors don't meet APA standard but they should give you pretty eggs and it's nice to re-home them together -- going to a new environment is an interruption in chicken's lives -- chickens are creatures of habit and an interruption is stressful -- so having a familiar friend together is nice. I hope they will have a good home where there aren't assertive chicken breeds around them. JMHO.

I have always heard regarding Fowl Pox, if you don't have it in your area, don't introduce it with the vaccine.  I think I read that right on the paper that came with it.  So, I didn't use it.  If I have it here it must be a very mild dry type form, because I haven't seen much of anything over the years.  I decided not to risk bringing the wet form here with the vaccine and having to vaccinate every year thereafter.
The thing with fowl pox is if you see it in a bird, you isolate it and then can stop the spread by vaccinating the rest immediately.  So, might be a good idea to keep the vaccine on hand.

Thank you for the additional insight... I heard most cases aren't fatal, but it's not something I want to deal with for sure... I'm careful as I can be, but it's gotten way too close for comfort for me...

Could I get some opinions of this cockerel. He is 9 months old. He is on alert in this picture.
Looks good, Lisa... his tail angle is usually a bit lower? If you'd rather have his brother back, just let me know...

Balthazar is going to be my black breeder this season and I'm not going to cross lines in the blacks, so I've gotta let this guy go... really soon, lol...

Yea, it's the wet pox I wouldn't want to risk a chance of bringing here. It's a live vaccine so I guess there is risk of mosquito picking it up and then it being in your area? Idk, but at this time that risk is one I'd rather not take.

I know my friend just had dry pox, so that's good, only one in her flock got it to for some reason, the rest of her flock was fine.

I had to post this photo of Fancy. She's too light, but has such a hilarious beard- it's always wet or dirty. She's a good little Mama broody too but turns into the incredible hulk when she gets that way. She stayed puffed up for 2 months, long after her chicks were born. She's a mess, can't wait to get babies from her, hope they get that huge beard.

Ah... and same vaccine whether it's for the wet or dry, right?

Good to hear, then... maybe I shouldn't worry too much, lol...

Lovely beard and muffs! Don't stress on her color, type is more important... that's why we asked for a good profile shot of her... :D ;)

Hi Everyone,
smile.png
I just got all my pens setup about a week ago. Well my wheaten pen and lavender pen have been done for months. I have three blue and two splash hens. With a blue and black rooster with them. Not planning on hatching much. I would like to hatch a few blue and splash though. I know that is probably not the best setup but will work for now. Anyone hatching yet? My hens have pretty much stopped laying. We have had a lot of snow and cold!
