Congrats, Deb! We are hatching today too. I am going to send you a pic of the two SPECTACULAR babies from Dusty (your frizzie splash) and her gorgeous husband, Chuckie. They are at the gawky stage right now, but they sure stand out. They both appear to be splash. Can't get a photo right now, too busy watching babies hatch!

Yay! I'm glad she's doing so well. Her momma started up laying again (along with some of my other bantam cochins) then I moved them to a new pen and they quit. Grrr... Can't wait to see the babies

I have 1 of my original black pullets, 1 I got from Jerry DeSmidt, and three of your in there and NONE of the five of them are laying. Naughty girls. I had another black in from you in that pen who is laying, but she figured out how to fly over the 12' wall dividing my stalls and keeps escaping to free range with the BBS group. I'm going to fix her little wagon as soon a I can feel my fingers to put some netting over that pen. I am completely thrilled with your kids! I think they are having lots of fun here also...

Though I can't blame any of them for wanting to freeload, it is miserable outside here! I wouldn't want to lay an egg out there either.

Sounds like they are having a grand old time! I am hatching lots of Faverolles hear to. The girls are laying well though but thats with a bit of added light now much though only about an hour I am thinking about taking away the added light and giving them a few weeks break before actual spring roles around.

I've been told that it does. From what I have seen- it shows up more in males.

Yes, it comes through to the offspring, and no, you don't want to use him for a serious breeding program..if they are just for your own enjoyment, then go for it! But I wouldn't plan on selling a bunch of his chicks and really "getting them out there" as it's not really doing anything beneficial for the breed or the variety.

Bummer. I am trying to improve the line, not come up with a mutt flock!
Anyone selling an extra splash or blue roo out there???

Momma-hen-it is way more common than you think.
I've been really surprised to see so much gold bleeding on photos on BYC from Ameraucanas.
But if you think about it, you would really have to test hatch and keep til maturity offspring from each of your breeders
to make sure they had enough melanin to have proper color. If your roo has it and you hatched a bunch of eggs than the hens
probably carry the genes and breeding them together will just show this issue. Time for a new roo indeed!!

Well, the girls that have him can keep him. I'm not working on the Lavenders anymore. Just my BBS flock (and my Brabanters) Just don't have the room! We have to replace some of the pens.....discovered they were NOT predator proof

Over a dozen killed, including a beautiful Lavender roo. The BBS pen is safe, except for the roo, which was my fault as the gate was left open.

Oh noooo!!!! Truly sorry for your loss-that is very rough. It is always hard to lose one and suddenly and in numbers is heartbreaking.
I hope you can rebuild soon and give thoughts of breeding to the future.

I had a recent bout with some predator. I had been hit 3 nites in a row. 2 were just near dark, before I closed up the coops. I first thought it could be a hawk. But, then seen the tracks. Looks like a small Coyote or Fox. I need to just stay up and locked and loaded and hang out and wait. It is cold, it will suck. But, you have to do what you have to do.

Judging by the time of day it sounds like to me to be a fox. I have had experiences with them and they do hit in the middle of the afternoon but mostly just as it is getting dark. I actually saw the %$#&#! fox running right in the middle of my chickens and when I shouted at him he just looked at me like "what?" then trotted off and hid while I was getting my gun.
Hope you have better luck!

Thanks cottagegarden. It IS tough to lose them, and Ameraucanas especially have such sweet personalities.

Lildinkem, I wish I could spend the nights out there, but I work nights, as does hubby. We just have to rebuild them better (and hopefully bigger!!)
