Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

She looks ok to me. If I were to pick one for show, I would pick one with a tiny bit longer back.

The eggs are on the green side, but so are some of my splash bird eggs. I would only hatch the eggs that are on the right hand side of the screen to get better egg color in the flock.

I like to put a red background out when photographing my eggs.

Now that I am hatching out some Ameraucana babies, what should I be looking for in those babies? Right now I have several silvers 1-5 weeks, but don't know quite what to look for at these ages, shank color, beards, shape, feathering, etc. Soon we should have some wheatens, too.

What do all you experienced breeders look for? What usually changes, what doesn't? What characteristics do you weigh the heaviest? (assuming you are looking for SQ birds?)

Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

pips&peeps :

It's Julie Gabbard.

I laughed and the lady asked, "is that good or bad?" and I said, "I'll just say nothing"......

Once when someone mentioned her Ameraucanas on one of the Marans clubs, Julie spoke up and replied that although she still had her original stock, she also now had (or was about to aquire) pure B/B/S stock from Cree Farms. I'd assume that's where these birds came from, and not the original birds she started with.

Ok, I just looked at her site, and she now lists the Ameraucanas as Ameraucana/Araucana (hybrids), and mentions they are pet quality. She has the Blue Ameraucanas listed separately, and says they are out of proven stock. (I would assume these are the ones from Cree)

I don't know her personally by the way. I'd just like to think that maybe she's learned from her mistakes.....at least on the Ameraucana issue.

...and kudos to MPC for listing their Easter Eggers as Easter Eggers!

Edited to add that the Gabbard's EE's are about half the price of the new Blue Ameraucana line, so sounds like she's keeping the two types separated. Hope so!

Thank you MPC for taking an educated stand and raising the bar for the other hatcheries.
You get what you pay for, so $8.00 eggs wont be at the same level
as breeder quality eggs but it could be a good way for someone to get interested in a breed
and go from there.

Hopefully the other hatcheries will take notice of this and do the same.

Yea, $8.00 an egg is a bit high. Wonder what their cost is.

I do love the silver girls, but I'm not crazy about the roosters.

I lOVE the hens AND the roosters, and in fact am looking for a few hens (or a trio or quad) at the moment. Just send any extra chicks to me!

I've got three pullets available.......

You do know the silvers need lots of work?????

Jean, I've noticed people discussing Silvers on the forum but didn't pay much attention to the details since I don't raise them. You don't have to go into depth here, but what are the most notable problems?

How old are your pullets? Young enough to ship together?
