Kristin, thanks for the PM. I guess I should've read it before making that last post. As y'all can tell, I'm WAY behind in work, emails, and catchin' up with my BYC threads.
Now, before I address Kristin's request, let me first say that this is in NO way intended to poo poo Victor!
As Shannon said, the primary reason I culled this cockerel was because of the red in his tailfeathers. John Blehm has suggested that in order to produce females with the blackest tails one would select for males with the blackest tails. Seems to make sense to me. He also says that there may be a correlation between the males tails being edged with red and the black breast feathers on Wheatens being edged/laced with red. So I am thinking the opposite may be true too. At any rate, I decided to cull hard for any red in the tails this year.
Victor also has too much black in his hackles for me. I'm trying to get to a point where I have clean colored hackles without the black striping.
I like his body color - not too dark and good lacing. He's got a good comb. His tail is a little - emphasis on "little" high for me and I think he's a little long in the back. Leg color is not bad but I'd like to see it a bit better too. I don't think I was initially looking at it when I sold Victor to Shannon but looking at the pics now, it appears the eye color is too light as well.
So there's my two-cents worth. Jean where are you? Looks like I'll have to send you an email and get you to come on here and judge this bird.
God Bless,
