Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

According to Tailfeathers, it's the brown in the tail that's a problem. As for size and beard, Victor's pretty young (about 5 mos?).

Here's a straight-on side view:

Very nice pics Shannon. I'm glad you like him. You take very good pictures because he looks really good in those photos. Having said that they also really show the red in his tails.

Now, where's Jean???? I'll have to read thru the rest of these posts to see if she's seen him yet. Hello Jean? When you see this guy, shoot me an email and let me know what you think of him. How's the hackles and saddles? How 'bout the body color? Leg color? Type? Go ahead, let me have it 'cause I can't improve if I don't get some good, tough constructive criticism.

God Bless,

Hi speckledhen,
I'm wondering if my newly hatch Ameraucanas will look like yours when fully grown. I have 1-black and 2 Lavenders hatched on 03/07 from the eggs I bought from Sebrightmom a fellow BYCer.
Here are some pics.

Kristin, thanks for the PM. I guess I should've read it before making that last post. As y'all can tell, I'm WAY behind in work, emails, and catchin' up with my BYC threads.

Now, before I address Kristin's request, let me first say that this is in NO way intended to poo poo Victor!

As Shannon said, the primary reason I culled this cockerel was because of the red in his tailfeathers. John Blehm has suggested that in order to produce females with the blackest tails one would select for males with the blackest tails. Seems to make sense to me. He also says that there may be a correlation between the males tails being edged with red and the black breast feathers on Wheatens being edged/laced with red. So I am thinking the opposite may be true too. At any rate, I decided to cull hard for any red in the tails this year.

Victor also has too much black in his hackles for me. I'm trying to get to a point where I have clean colored hackles without the black striping.

I like his body color - not too dark and good lacing. He's got a good comb. His tail is a little - emphasis on "little" high for me and I think he's a little long in the back. Leg color is not bad but I'd like to see it a bit better too. I don't think I was initially looking at it when I sold Victor to Shannon but looking at the pics now, it appears the eye color is too light as well.

So there's my two-cents worth. Jean where are you? Looks like I'll have to send you an email and get you to come on here and judge this bird.

God Bless,

I'm pretty sure he's Blue Wheaten. There are no black feathers on him that I can tell and the chest feathers under his cream colored ones are coming in sort of a grayish blue. He's a big boy, larger than the Barred Rock cockerels or the black and splash Ameraucana cockerels. He's four-and-a-half weeks old now.

Are these of the same chick? We'd love to see some of you lavender babies.

Ok....so I started all over with my AM's last year because the ones that I had to begin weren't pure, upon breeding them and raising a few of their babies......I found out somebody else had been in to the wood pile somewhere in the parent stock. So all the girls made it to the laying flock and the boys to the freezer and I started over. My concern is this......though my new birds are beautiful and purebreds they are absolutely freaked out flighty birds. I have been working and working with them to no avail. I can't even open the coop door and they go berserk! On top of that finally all three pullets layed and egg just about 2 weeks or so ago and since that day no-one has layed an egg. Anyway, I'm just concerned that they are so flighty. I handled these birds from babies just like all the rest of my birds but they won't have anything to do with it. I spend time just standing in their coop run trying to get them to eat some scratch out of my hand....no way is that happening, they all go over to a corner and pile on top of each other. They were all born in July and August last year. The roos are very pretty and the girls OMG my black pullet Beverly is drop dead gorgeous....I would so like to have some more black babies just like her but I am afraid that this freakishness will pass on......what do you all think?
