Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Way to cute.

Congratulations

Oh those lav chicks!

I sent a BW pair to live with NellaBean- they'll be spoiled rotten. In turn, she's getting some wheaten marans & I might get a few to add the the ameraucana pen.

The one itty bitty wheaten my broody hatched has taken to riding around on mama cochin's back. It's the only chick that does it- hope that doesn't mean it's a roo!

She's an egg-improvement project.

I moved the wheaten pullets to the "big house" since they are 5 months old now. They haven't been brave enough to come outside for a week- until one came out and couldn't figure out how to get back in

Mama cochin with most of her chicks (the rest of the wellie girls sold already) The little ameraucana stands out like a sore thumb.

I have another broody LF cochin setting now, but I wasn't able to find any ameraucana eggs. The girls are driving me nuts with the egg hiding!

HappyMtn,

Who did you get your start in the wheaten ameraucanas from??? They have very nice coloring in the tails. I may try to get some hatching eggs from that person to improve my flock.......

Haha- those girls are from Halo (your grandbabies) . 2 are a little lacking in the beard department, but the eggs were sooo blue. I have them in with an SW and a wheaten roo- hoping to improve on the beards a bit. I DO love their color!

Your wheaten looks more like a BW- does she have black in the tail? Maybe it's just the angle

She has very little black in the tail. She has it in her wings when you unfold them.

Nope, not bad at all! Congrats! I had either 6 or 8 (can't believe I can't remember right now) Black/Lavender splits and only 2 Lavender hatch from 22 eggs, and they were mine, not shipped. Some of the eggs had been sitting on the table close to 2 weeks though, so I really didn't know if they'd hatch or not but I went ahead and put them in with the fresher ones. Only one of those older ones did hatch. There were 7 or 8 that had no development at all.

I had a problem at the very end with humidity going too high from the others hatching and a few chicks drown.

The majority came out squeeky clean and were fluffy and dry within minutes, so I was shocked. First time I've had that happen with this incubator. Pretty disappointing and sad.

The chicks sure are cute though

Humidity is a definite issue with lavs. I'm still trying to get it right. I've had 4 or 5 hatches now and there's always atleast one chick that drowns.

My last hatch I went with a pretty low humidity (about 55-60%) and I hatched out 9/12. One piped on the wrong end the the other two never pipped. It was my best hatch yet.

Hmmm.....two of the chicks that died were Lavs.

Seems the last chick that hatches in every hatch has always been more wet or even sticky, but this is the first time I've had 3 drown like that (in this incubator). The two Lavender chicks that hatched are adorable, but sure was hoping for more, as I really have plenty of Black/Lavender Split hens already. They're only about 6 days old, but looks like at least one of the two Lavs is a cockerel, has a larger comb and large legs already. One looks like a girl, with smaller legs and comb.

I set around 20 to 24 more eggs right after those were done, all fresh this time, so we'll see in about 16 or 17 more days. Got my fingers and toes crossed!

Oh, and I do the low humidity too, so I guess the problem had to be just the rise from the chicks hatching, along with the normal humid weather we have here in AR. Maybe, IDK.
